Over the years, I’ve rejected most Beatles’ covers. However, there are four exceptions.

First, this is Mary Hopkin’s version of “In my life”:

“There are places i’ll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends i still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life i’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When i think of love as something new
Though i know i’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i’ll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more

Though i know i’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know i’ll often stop and think about them
In my life i love you more
In my life i love you more”

The second is The Carpenters’ “Ticket to ride”.

Before they became international superstars, Karen Carpenter played drums. Karen was only 19 when they recorded this song. It was a year before they hit # 1 with “Close to you”:

“I think i’m gonna be sad, I think it’s today, yeah.
The girl that’s driving me mad Is going away.
She’s got a ticket to ride, She’s got a ticket to ride,
She’s got a ticket to ride, But she don’t care.
She said that living with me Is bringing her down yeah.
For she would never be free When i was around.
She’s got a ticket to ride, She’s got a ticket to ride,
She’s got a ticket to ride, But she don’t care.
I don’t know why she’s ridin’ so high,
She ought to think twice, She ought to do right by me.
Before she gets to saying goodbye,
She ought to think twice, She ought to do right by me.
I think i’m gonna be sad, I think it’s today yeah.
The girl that’s driving me mad Is going away, yeah.
She’s got a ticket to ride, She’s got a ticket to ride,
She’s got a ticket to ride, But she don’t care.
I don’t know why she’s ridin’ so high, She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.
Before she gets to saying goodbye,
She ought to think twice, She ought to do right by me.
She said that living with me, Is bringing her down, yeah.
For she would never be free When i was around.
Ah, she’s got a ticket to ride, She’s got a ticket to ride,
She’s got a ticket to ride, But she don’t care.”

The next two songs are not technically covers. In other words, they were not recorded by The Beatles.

Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas released “From a window”, a tune that Lennon-McCartney passed up for their first album:

“Late yesterday night, I saw a light shine from a window,
And as I looked again, Your face came into sight.
I couldn’t walk on Until you’d gone from your window.
I had to make you mine, I knew you were the one.
Oh, I would be so glad Just to have a love like that,
Oh, I would be so true And I’d live my life for you.
So meet me tonight, Just where the light shines from a window,
And as I take your hand, Say that you’ll be mine tonight.
Oh, I would be so glad Just to have a love like that,
Oh, I would be true And I’d give my life for you.
So meet me tonight, Just where the light shines from a window,
And as I take your hand,
Say that you’ll be mine tonight.”

Peter & Gordon were part of the original Beatles’ invasion of the US charts. Peter was Jane’s brother, the same Jane who was Paul
McCartney’s girlfriend at the time. This is “World without love”:

“Please lock me away And don’t allow the day
Here inside where I hide With my loneliness
I don’t care what they say I won’t stay
In a world without love

Birds sing out of tune And rain clouds hide the moon
I’m OK, here I’ll stay With my loneliness
I don’t care what they say I won’t stay
In a world without love

So I wait and in a while I will see my true love’s smile
She may come, I know not when
When she does I lose
So baby until then

Lock me away And don’t allow the day
Here inside where I hide
With my loneliness
I don’t care what they say I won’t stay
In a world without love

So I wait and in a while I will see my true love’s smile
She may come, I know not when
When she does I lose So baby until then

Lock me away And don’t allow the day
Here inside where I hide
With my loneliness I don’t care what they say I won’t stay
In a world without love
I don’t care what they say I won’t stay
In a world without love”
