Notice the bold section below. USA Today is deliberately painting Trump as anti-immigrant when he has been clear he is anti-illegal immigrant. (His wife is an immigrant, duh.) In addition to this, it scares me to see Drudge celebrating Trump’s ‘Broad powers’ on immigration. This is precisely why Bush & Obama should have eschewed Executive Orders & Signing Statements. Tyranny is tyranny. The law is the law. It matters not which hand holds the pen.
So how big will Donald Trump’s wall really be?
The wall along the southwest border with Mexico was one of the president-elect’s signature campaign promises, as he railed against illegal immigration and vowed to seal the borders against criminals, terrorists and millions of people trying to enter the United States legally. Now, immigration experts are trying to figure out exactly how those policies will work in a Trump administration.
And so far, it looks like he will be able to follow through on many of his pledges — with or without help from Congress.
“Generally speaking, any president has wide discretion when it comes to enforcing our immigration laws because immigration touches on national sovereignty,” said Stephen Yale-Loehr, a professor at Cornell Law School and author of a 21-volume treatise, Immigration Law and Procedure.
To be clear, I’m not saying Trump is being tyrannical (he hasn’t even taken office yet). I’m just saying that it’s wrong for any president to take unilateral executive action, should it happen, and it’s disturbing that people who hated it under Obama are now celebrating it with their guy.
Trump’s push on immigration is setting up a showdown on illegal immigration in “sanctuary cities”. At the very least, we’re promised a very entertaining (or at least interesting) 4 years.
