Is the 5.56 a 300 Yard Cartridge?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Of course it will shoot that far – and much farther. It’s plenty accurate in a decent rifle. But is it something a rifleman could use against an enemy combatant at 300 yards/meters?

What do you think? It’s not enough for reliable kills on 100 lb deer but does it do an acceptable job on 200 lb animals? Some of our readers have experience in these matters.

Here is a video about sighting in an AR pattern rifle. The shooter uses iron sights. My eyes are more than 40 years old so I tend to rely on optic sights. They can make the groups smaller but they won’t make the round any deadlier.

What about different loads? Are some more effective at longer range?

Hey, don’t forget to check with the mfg for the velocity tests because according to scientists, when you shoot north, the earth is moving at 1500 fps west to east, so if your bullet takes one second to reach the target, the target will move 1500 feet eastward during that time…. when you throw a ball out of a moving car, does it fly straight from the point of origin, or does it move with the car until friction with the air slows it down.

        • Jango

If you are commenting on my post, please note that it has nothing to do with throwing a ball from a car. Consider this seriously and you will see that it is impossible. If you select a bullet that travels at 1400 fps and set up a target to the north or south at 1400 feet, the bullet will take one second to hit the target. Science tells us that during that one second, the target will move west to east 1500 feet (earth moves at 1000 mph = 1500 fps). Therefore, if we lived on a round spinning globe we would not be able to hit the target unless we aimed toward the east of it just like we would aim at a flying duck. Because the mfg Guarantees that he has tested his bullets and they travel at 1400 fps in any direction, he must have done so on a flat stationary earth otherwise he could not say so.

You do realize, Jango that we’re talking BB gun speeds here right? My air rifle shoots at 1400fps. Air rifles like mine are accurate to all of about 50 yards. A standard 5.56 fmj has a muzzle velocity of 3100fps. False analogy much?

            • Jango

sim1776: It’s not an issue of how many fps a bullet travels, it’s a false teaching that we live on a round spinning globe. If we did, we would have to make adjustments for every direction we shoot. I used this example because then we are using math which does not lie to prove that. NO ONE will address the issue because they cannot deny it. They either use personal slander or avoid the issue. Can you say that what I wrote above is false? Think about it. If you shoot east on a round spinning globe, the earth travels at 1500 fps and the bullet at 1400 fps. How could you hit your target when it is moving faster than the bullet? Can you solve this obvious lie? We cannot be living on a round spinning globe if we can hit the target every time regardless of which direction we shoot. That would only work on a flat stationary earth. But you see, no one can address this because they know it’s true, they just don’t want to believe it. They would rather believe a lie.

Now when you shoot a bullet, the rotating globe will not slow it down because our atmosphere is moving with it.

        • Jango

That is just a ridiculous. Does the atmosphere move the bullet at an angle toward the east? Then it would not be travelling at 1400 fps because that distance would be greater. Do you really believe that the moment the bullet leaves the barrel of the gun, the atmosphere pushes it 1500 feet to the east???

Jango’s a true believer, srsly1. Piddly things like Laws of Motion or Relativity mean nothing to him.

As for the 5.56NATO, I’m not a fan of it. It should be noted however that even the military/veteran experts have never used hollow points. Personally I’m a fan of 7.62NATO. Three times the round weight. Even heavier loads are available for the venerable .308 with considerable accuracy at 300 yards. Supposedly the HK battle rifles (G3 and variants) were effective out to 800 yards with iron sights.

Jango. more of your little knowledge being dangerous; actually that is more of a problem for naval artillary, especially when firing long shots north or south in equatorial regions. I understand that it was a major problem for some of the combatants in the Battle for the Coral Sea during WWII, during which the “over-the-horizon” targets featured.

Why is your blue bag dirty with what looks like perspiration salts? if you’re gonna be respectable and teach by video you have to have CLEAN stuff.

Seen this on too many cook & bake shows. Trying to teach with beautiful women and DIRTY pots.
