New York Educrats Figure Out How to Boost Graduation Rates

Hats off to New York educrats who have figured out how to boost graduation rates:

The New York State Education Department said on Friday that the high school graduation rate hit a new high of 79.4 percent in 2016, an increase of 1.3 points from 2015 and more than 12 points from a decade ago.

This miraculous feat was accomplished at least in part the liberal egalitarian way: by lowering standards.

Among other changes, the Board of Regents, the body that governs the state’s education system, made it possible for students with disabilities to graduate by passing two Regents exams, rather than five, if they showed proficiency in the other subjects through coursework.

By “disabilities,” they aren’t talking about people whose legs have been blown off by terrorist IEDs. Learning disabilities are very different.

I am not lousy at math. I am math-disabled. So don’t discriminate against me by expecting me to pass a math test.

Additionally, the Regents allowed more students to appeal to their districts to graduate despite falling slightly short on one or two Regents exams.

The word “flunking” is offensive. Now we must say, “falling slightly short.”

City University of New York has applied a similar strategy to improve the numbers.

Bill de Blasio noted that the share of students who met the City University of New York’s standards for college readiness in English and math had hit a high of 37.2 percent in 2016. There was a change in that standard, as well: CUNY lowered its bar for college readiness on the algebra Regents exam to a score of 70 from 80 because the state had switched to a harder test.

That much harder? I doubt it.

Now for some bad news. The hordes of immigrants who have been flooding in from the Third World are not making it through school:

There was a sharp drop in the graduation rate among students still learning English, who are generally recent immigrants. The graduation rate for these students declined to 26.6 percent in 2016 from 33.8 percent in 2015.

No worries; this is nothing that can’t be fixed by lowering standards still further. Maybe they should grant honorary degrees to any recent immigrants or their offspring who can mark Democrat on a ballot and find their way to the welfare office. What else do they need to know?
