President Donald Trump’s recent decision to scrub President Obama’s transgender-rights mandate of a few years ago, has infuriated both Republican and Democratic lawmakers.
Obama’s federal mandate was penned to “protect” students who identified themselves as transgender (even if they were only pre-operative) by allowing them to use opposite sex school bathrooms.
So, if you are a “fully functioning” male student, who believes that you are a really a girl, under Obama’s edict, you would be able to use the girls school bathroom.
Girls would also be allowed to use the boys bathroom, if deep down they really felt they were male.
It is no surprise that the lawmakers that are up in arms over Trump’s decision are members of the LBGT Equality Caucus in the House of Representatives.
Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R), who has a transgender child, was one of those members of the House that took issue.
“This lamentable decision can lead to hostile treatment of transgender students and studies have shown that bullying and harassment can be detrimental to the emotional and physical well-being of teenagers. Evidence has shown that acceptance of transgender students lowers their risk of suicide. Jared and I introduced our SNDA bill to prevent discrimination of transgender young people and we will re-introduce it because our country benefits when everyone is accepted and we live up to our nation’s promise of inclusiveness.”
Ros-Lehtinen’s Republican colleague and Miami neighbor, Rep. Carlos Curbelo (pictured), had this to say about Trump’s decisions to scrap Obama’s transgender mandate:
“This is a disappointing choice for the Administration to make. We should be working toward ensuring all American children feel safe and accepted in their schools, regardless of where they live, their race, creed, gender identity or sexual orientation.”
And of course there is Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D), arguably the staunchest supporter of LGBT rights on the entire planet.
Wasserman Schultz laid into Trump on Twitter, calling his action a ‘disgrace.’
