Trump-Led Sanctuary City Crackdown Continues

President Trump’s recent declaration to cut federal funding to local and state governments who push for and support “sanctuary cities” has been heard loud and clear by the Republican-led Florida state legislature.

HB 697, a bill that would force local governments and law enforcement agencies to back the enforcement of federal immigration laws, has passed the first of four committee hurdles on Monday.

According to the bill sponsored by Republican Larry Metz, the following would take place:

-Any existing “sanctuary” policies would have to be repealed within 90 days.

-It would also require public employees report violations to the attorney general or a state attorney, with penalties including removal from office.

-It would let state attorneys seek injunctions against government agencies that violate the act and allow for fines of up to $5,000 a day for policies violating it.

-Additionally, the bill would let citizens sue governments and law enforcement with such policies, should an undocumented immigrant injure a person.-POLITICO

With several of the  pro-amnesty for illegal immigrants proponents, who opposed similar legislation in 2016 having left government, Metz’s bill could actually find its way onto Governor Rick Scott’s desk.

Scott, like Trump, support legal immigration, and would surely signed the bill into law.

As you can expect, the pro-illegal immigration lobby is not all that happy with this bill.
