Summer 1968 and "McArthur Park" by Richard Harris was on the radio

“Mac Arthur’s Park” was released in April and was heard on the radio during the summer of 1968.

We were in the middle of another presidential election.

In the end, Nixon beat Humphrey.

Also, the Packers beat the Cowboys in the famous “Ice Bowl” at the end of December 1967 and moved on to repeat as Super Bowl champs in January 1968.

In baseball, the Tigers won the World Series and The Beatles recorded “Hey Jude”.

In the summer of 1968, Richard Harris, the great actor, got together with composer Jimmy Webb and the result was MacArthur Park.

Webb was a great songwriter.

He wrote Glen Campbell’s “By The Time I Get To Phoenix“, “Galveston” and “Wichita Lineman“.

He also wrote The Fifth Dimension’s “Up, up and away“!

And he wrote Art Ganfunkel’s “All I know“.

MacArthur Park’s arrangement was over 7 minutes long! It is really two songs, the vocal portion and a wonderful instrumental bridge in the middle.

Today, some people think that “MacArthur Park” is one of the worst songs ever recorded. (Pop music madness)

Last, but not least, Miss Marcus, my English teacher loved the lyrics. She told me that I would remember this song’s lyrics in the future.

It was many many years ago and Miss Marcus was right. Here is the song and the lyrics:

I recall the yellow cotton dress
