Endorses his 27-year-old son to replace him

You have to hand it to the entire Conyers family. They have an overabundance of chutzpah.

John Conyers, embroiled in a sexual harassment scandal that apparently involves thousands of dollars in pay-outs, is retiring from Congress from his hospital bed, where he is recovering from a serious case of shame.  Well, not that much shame.

As he waxes eloquent about his “grand legacy”, he is endorsing his son to replace him. I guess his wife is too busy re-acclimating herself to life outside prison, where she was sent for corruption in local Michigan politics,

“My legacy cannot be compromised or diminished in any way, but what we are going through now. This too, shall pass. … I am very proud that I am the dean of the Congress.”

King of the swamp would be a better description. That statement is worthy of the Clinton family.

Is it any wonder Michigan is in such a mess?

That John Conyers anounced his retirement and then endorsed his son John Conyers III was a little unexpected, considering his great-nephew, Ian Conyers, a Michigan state senator, had said earlier that John Conyers would not seek re-election in 2018 instead of retiring before the end of the current term, and that he would run for the open seat.

The Constitution does not allow for appointments to the House.So while Conyers has endorsed his son for the seat, the process begins with the Michigan Democratic Party through its nomination process. Then voters decide in either a special election or the 2018 congressional elections.

The process begins with Conyers submitting a letter of resignation to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, who under state law declares the seat vacant. Snyder also sets the dates for the special primary and general elections, almost certainly next year. The processes and procedures for the elections are then put in place by Michigan’s Secretary of State office.

The younger John Conyers, 27, would be a first-time political candidate. But he has already been connected to an ethics issue, according to the Detroit Free Press. In 2010, the congressman had to reimburse the state Treasury Department $5,682 for his son’s misuse of a taxpayer-funded Cadillac Escalade, the paper reports.

Ethics issues seem to run in the Conyers family. The wife of retiring Rep. John Conyers, Monica Conyers, served just over 27 months of the 37-month sentence received for her pleading guilty to accepting a bribe as a Detroit council member in the Synagro Sludge scandal. She was released from the Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia on 21 December 2012 to a residential re-entry program followed by release to home confinement on 25 January 2013, both in the Detroit area.
