Will the Italian Election Be Sabotaged?

I have a confession to make. When I was a DEA agent in Milan, Italy from 1982-1987, I paid very little attention to their political system. To put it Italian terms, it was a casino-a “bordello” of confusion and constant changes of governments. The number two State Department foreign service officer at the consulate was charged with closely following the political developments. I told him more than once that I didn’t envy his job.

Yet, with all the turmoil, Italy persevered, and many of us living there believed it was Europe’s most stable country. With all the problems, people lived well, ate (very) well, and rook their August vacations.

Now Italy is faced with new problems-a never-ending wave of migrants pouring in largely from Africa, and Italy is not equipped to deal with them. The new election, however, with victories and a majority by the center-right coalition of Cinque Stelle (5 Stars Party), Lega Nord (Northern League), Forza Italia (Italian Force) and Fratelli D’Italia (Brothers of Italy) has brought hope that the flow will be stopped. The coalition of the above center-right parties opposes the Euro and control over Italy by the EU. bIt’s electoral victor y signifies the Italian people standing up and making a statement.

Now, however, the mysterious parliamentary system seems to be working against this hope. The coalition couldn’t agree on who would be  prime minister, and now the president of the country, Sergio Mattarella, has refused to accept the center-right choice for minister of the economy, Paolo Savona, because he ( Savona) doesn’t support the idea of the Euro currency. It is possible that new elections might have to be held.
