“Microsoft Windows Update KB3133977 is Deadly”
Submitted by IWB

“Microsoft Warns Windows 7 Has A Serious Problem: Earlier this year Microsoft MSFT warned users that Windows 7 has serious problems. I dismissed its claims as a desperate attempt to shift copies of Windows 10 (and I still do), but now Microsoft has warned of a new serious Windows 7 problem that is very real – even though it makes no sense whatsoever…

In short: Microsoft has made a seemingly small yet completely bizarre tweak to Windows Update on Windows 7 and confirmed it is crippling many users’ PCs. The tweak? It switched the status of Windows 7 update KB3133977 from ‘Optional’ to ‘Recommended’. The bizarre part? Despite acknowledging the problems, Microsoft knew they would occur in advance and it has no plans to do anything about it. Ok, let’s put some meat on these bones.

PCs That Suddenly Won’t Start: It all centers around Asus motherboards. Now 27 years old, Asus is one of the largest PC component makers and supplies motherboards to many of the world’s biggest PC makers. Recently it enabled Secure Boot in UEFI on all its motherboards. This wasn’t a problem for older PCs because Windows 7 didn’t support Secure Boot, that is until KB3133977 came along in March and enabled it.

Initially the fallout was small. Asus confirmed the problem, Microsoft confirmed the problem.  But the best news was KB3133977 was an optional Windows 7 update so it had to be manually installed to take effect. The solution was simple: just steer clear of KB3133977 (aka do nothing) and you’d be fine. Then last month – for some bizarre reason – Microsoft made KB3133977 a ‘Recommended’ update. The result was every user running Windows 7 and default Windows Update settings (the vast majority) would find the update now installed automatically. And then everyone with an Asus motherboard was hit. Woody Leonhard at InfoWorld says he’s seeing a lot more problems being reported.

A Global Problem” As InfoWorld’s Windows expert Woody Leonhard notes “I’m now seeing problems reported from all over the globe about Windows 7 machines that suddenly won’t boot”. Affected machines simply show a red box which says:

All of which does nothing to pinpoint the problem or solve it for those without a second secured boot device. In short: you’d be screwed.

The Good News And Staying Safe: The good news is Asus has now issued a workaround to get PCs booting up again. Furthermore Asus must take some of the blame for not reacting faster when KB3133977 presented a potential landmine and issuing new updates to its motherboards.

How do you know if you have an Asus motherboard in your Windows 7 PC? Go to: All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and select System Information. This will list your PC’s components, including the motherboard. One downside: some major PC makers like Dell and HP rebrand the motherboard as the computer’s model number. In which case you should do a web search on your model or call the manufacturer directly.

The Bad News And What Comes Next: As for the bad news? It’s Microsoft’s reaction. On the plus side, Microsoft did update the support document for KB3133977 with a warning which states: “After you install update 3133977 on a Windows 7 x64-based system that includes an Asus-based main board, the system does not start”. But Microsoft also uses the document an opportunity to promote upgrades to Windows 10: “Microsoft has also done nothing to modify KB3133977 or release a new patch so users with Asus motherboards don’t run into this problem in the first place. Furthermore, at the time of publishing, KB3133977 remains a ‘Recommended’ in Windows Update for Windows 7.”

Needless to say, conspiracy theorists will have a ball seeing it as yet another new way Microsoft can push users to Windows 10. Especially with upgrade rates slowing in April. This in itself is remarkable given the increasing number of heavy handed and devious ways Microsoft has been pushing Windows 10 onto Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. Regardless, the message is clear: life is going to become increasingly uncomfortable for Windows 7 users from now on. Whether they like it or not…
In brief: It’s official – Microsoft is screwing Windows 7.”

The program allows you to clear or view the hosts file in Notepad. The program does the same thing but just in case you wanted to see where your information heads to or you wanted to update your hosts file manually. A log file will be left in the folder you run it from. I took a huge chance and ran this on my clean Windows 10 installation. It did modify the hosts file exactly as promised and did remove the Apps it promised. IObit Uninstaller also spotted Destroy Windows 10 Spying running and removed leftover entries from the uninstall. So true, brother.
I run a lean, mean Win7 gaming machine too!
And even Win7 is challenging to get all the junk, garbage and bloatware out of there…

As if I want a fancy new Windows10 (whether ‘free’ or not).
They want everyone on the same intrusive new OS for the same reason they want a European Union:
Easier to control than a whole bunch of smaller nations individually!

NSA is apparently completely overwhelmed with data from all their spying…
Thousands and thousands of terabytes beyond count.
Safe to say that Win10 has been engineered to help address this, and streamline and automate a buncha stuff.
“Those who would trade their liberty for security, deserve neither”…

There is a reason Win 10 is free. It’s because you are paying for it. They are obviously selling your data to the highest bidder and your privacy is PRICELESS as long as you use it you will be an ENDLESS source of data, thus $$$!

      Ciao!

i have the answer its called LINUX

    • VirusGuard

Windows forces updates back on if you just turn them off in the control panel and even if you kill the windows service (if you are still alllowed too) then you will still get some updates and this is why i block microsoft ip-rangers in my routers firewall.

Trouble is now and then i open all the outbound ports in the firewall when i am trying to fix a problem and before you know it windows is download god knows what and a PC suddenly insists on the user picking a new password the next time they log on.

We are no longer in control on windows 10 and developers are being locked out of the registry, file system, schedule tasks and cannot even kill some processes anymore and thats with all the little tricks we know about to get jobs done.

The etc/hosts file is fast becoming a joke because microsoft put blocks on your blocks so they have no effect in blocking traffic and microsoft has no trouble bypasssing the LANs DNS servers or ignoring system proxy settings when it comes to getting updates.

All in all it’s a virus and running windows 10 is more like running a remote terminal these days.

Thanks for the information. I run W7 and I had problems with the configuration of updates, that I do manually. The machine tried to configure the software three times. The history says KB3133977 was unsuccessful. Probably I have not an Asus motherboard. Next time I will permanently hide this item. Or I stop updating all together. Anyway, thanks again for the info.

    • Jacko

The solution is very simple. Don’t run Windows. Run Linux. It’s free (as in freedom) and opensource. You decide what your PC does not some company. Any Windows version spies on you.

    • gapatriot

      I tri boot
an un updated version of win7 x64,ubuntu and when i feel really funky i run tails,
im sick of microsoft will not own an xbox either screw bill gates.
if it wasnt for a couple of games i wouldnt even have windows installed, been running ubuntu for years now,ive tried other versions but ubuntu works for me the best. and it out performs win7 for me.

get rid of microsoft go LINUX

    • FadingShadow2

EZ fix – turn off Windows updates. Done.

      • VirusGuard

Yes you think you can ??????

I’ve been cutting code since before windows 3.1 came of on diskkets and even if you hack the registry, play with permission to stop the update windows service and run your own DNS server that blocks lookups for 500 names that microsoft uses to download updates then you are still not safe.

Microsoft 10 comes with eight or more surigate processes that allows it to run any of the 3000 Dll’s that windows now comes with using command line swiches and these are black boxes that interconnect and no one knows what goes on anymore.

The file system has become an illusion and some times i try to delete a folder that was running a program i had written only to find that the folder is empty (cus i deleted the files) and yet windows blocks me for 20-30 seconds from removing my empty folder and thats after checking with task manager that my program is not still running as a ghost.

if you want to know what your CPU is doing then listen to the cooling fan because calls into windows API’s from code can and do lie all the time.

You seem to think that windows does what it says on the box and must think that people working for the CIA/NSA are all very nice people, they are not.
