“Will Trump ‘Wag the Dog’?”

“Are they trying to guarantee Trump will let the missiles fly?” Our colleague Dave Gonigam of The 5 Min. Forecast had just caught wind of Monday’s FBI raid on the office of Trump’s attorney, Michael Cohen. Perhaps you recall the 1997 film “Wag the Dog.” Perhaps you also recall that President Clinton – no need to specify – attacked suspected al-Qaida targets around the time Monica Lewinsky appeared before a grand jury. Then you grasp Dave’s half-joking, half-serious reaction to Monday’s business. In the Hollywood film, the fictional president faced – like Clinton – a sex scandal.
What kind of scandal faces this president? According to The New York Times, the G-men raiding Cohen’s office sought: “Information about Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who claims she carried on a nearly yearlong affair with Mr. Trump shortly after the birth of his youngest son in 2006. Ms. McDougal was paid $150,000 by American Media Inc., the Enquirer’s parent company, whose chief executive is a friend of Mr. Trump’s.
Agents were also searching the office and hotel room of the lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, for information related to Stephanie Clifford, better known as Stormy Daniels, a pornographic film actress, who also said she had sex with Mr. Trump while he was married. Mr. Cohen has acknowledged that he paid Ms. Clifford $130,000 as part of a nondisclosure agreement to secure her silence days before the 2016 presidential election.”
Once again… life imitates film. Now, to our understanding, the Mueller probe was empanelled strictly to investigate Russian tampering with the election. We were unaware that Mesdames Clifford and McDougal were agents of sinister Russian forces. But if you cast a net of sufficient width… you will ultimately catch yourself a fish. As one Russian (Soviet, really) famously said: “Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime.” That would of course be Lavrentiy Beria… head of Stalin’s secret police.
Even your upright standing editor may have minimally transgressed the law at some distant point - unwittingly, of course. For example, there was that one occasion when the police collared us for – no, let it pass. Of course… we never set our cap for the highest office in the land.
The scalp hunters say the hush money Trump’s team paid these lasses represented illegal campaign contributions. That is, they propelled Trump to the White House by throttling politically harmful stories. And so the carousel goes round.
But will President Trump “wag the dog” to divert attention from his personal scandal? We have no answer. And let the record show: Trump had already taken to the warpath before Monday’s FBI raid. But even a prickly fellow like Trump wallows in the applause of his critics. And when Trump launched last year’s missile attack on Syria, even his bitterest foes gave him his three cheers for “doing the right thing.”
But what do Daily Reckoning readers think about this Syria business? “I find it to defy credulity that hours after Trump declares that we will be pulling out of Syria, Assad would decide to gas his own people,” says one reader. “These are Deep State false flags.”
Ah, yes, the Deep State: “Trump should never attack Syria,” argues another reader. “He should leave Syria and clean out the Deep State at home!”
Yet another reader sniffs a rodent: “Right on cue – another chemical attack. This has become too predictable. Almost surely another false flag effort to get the USA involved.”
“Do not attack Syria,” agrees a fourth. “There is no definite evidence Assad did the chemical attack. Madness to go to an uncontrollable war over this.”
Lest we misinterpret his position, a fifth reader thunders: “I’ll make my answer as brief and pointed as possible: Not just no, but hell no!”
We could continue… but the timekeeper is tapping his watch. In all, not one single reader lined up behind an attack. Not a one.
Alas, we have omitted one central character from our sordid tale – Mrs. Melania Trump, first lady of the United States. Imagine the lacing the president must be taking right now: ‘So what was the deal with this Stormy Daniels? How much did you pay that Playboy bunny to keep quiet? How many other women did you pay off? And what were you really doing last Tuesday night when you said you were working late?’
If anyone wishes to distract from the news… it is certainly President Trump. Get ready, Mr. Assad… The missiles are heading your way – and soon.

“Russia’s Putin has never taken his eye off the ball. His ambition is not global hegemony or European conquest. Putin seeks what Russia has always sought: regional hegemony and a set of buffer states in eastern Europe and central Asia that can add to Russia’s strategic depth. In Syria, Russia has the warm water port of Tartarus – which is important when you consider that most Russian ports are ice-bound for months of the year.
It is strategic depth – the capacity to suffer massive invasions and still survive due to an ability to retreat to a core position and stretch enemy supply lines – that enabled Russia to defeat both Napoleon and Hitler. Putin also wants the modicum of respect that would normally accompany that geostrategic goal. Understanding Putin is not much more complicated than that.
In the twenty-first century, a Russian sphere of influence is not achieved by conquest or subordination in the old Imperial or Communist style. It is achieved by close financial ties, direct foreign investment, free trade zones, treaties, security alliances, and a network of associations that resemble earlier versions of the EU
Russian military intervention in Crimea and eastern Ukraine is best understood not as a Russian initiative, but as a Russian reaction. It was a response to U.S. and U.K. efforts to attack Russia by pushing aggressively and prematurely for Ukraine membership in NATO. This was done by deposing a Putin ally in Kiev in early 2014. This is not to justify Russia’s actions, merely to put them in a proper context. The time to peel off Ukraine for NATO was 1999, not 2014.
The Russian-Ukraine situation is a subset of the broader U.S.-Russian relationship. Here, the opposition comes not just from domestic opponents but from the globalist elite. Globalization emerged in the 1990s as a consequences of the end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany. For the first time since 1914, Russia, China and their respective empires could join the U.S., Western Europe and their former colonies in Latin America and Africa in a single global market.
Globalization relied on open borders, free trade, telecommunications, global finance, extended supply chains, cheap labor and freedom of the seas. Globalization as it existed from 1990 to 2007 made steady progress under the Bush-Clinton duopoly of power in the U.S. and like-minded leaders elsewhere. The enemy of globalization was nationalism, but nationalism was nowhere in sight.
The financial crisis of 2007–2008, caused by the elites’ own greed and inability to grasp the statistical properties of risk, put an end to the easy gains from globalization. Ironically, globalization gained in the short-run despite financial calamity. The same elites who created disaster were empowered to “fix” the situation under the auspices of the G20 Leaders’ Summit. This global rescue began with the first G20 summit hastily organized by George W. Bush and Nicolas Sarkozy, then the President of France, in November 2008.
Despite the financial bailouts and central bank easy money of the decade following the crisis, robust self-sustaining growth in line with pre-crisis trends has never really returned. Instead the world has suffered through a ten-year depression (defined as depressed below-trend growth), which continues to this day. What little growth emerged was captured mostly by the wealthy, which led to the greatest income inequality levels seen in over 80 years.
Discontent was palpable in middle-class and working class populations in the world’s major developed economies. This discontent morphed into political action. The result was the U.K. decision to leave the EU, called “Brexit,” the election of Donald Trump, and the rise of politicians such as Geert Wilders in the Netherlands and Marine Le Pen in France, among others.
What unites these politicians and political movements is nationalism. This can be defined as a desire to put national interests ahead of globalization. Nationalism can mean closing borders, restricting free trade to help local employment, fighting back against cheap labor and dumping with tariffs and trade adjustment assistance, and rejecting multilateral trade deals in favor of bilateral negotiations.
This brings us to the crux of the U.S.-Russia relationship. Simply put, Putin and Trump are the two most powerful nationalists in the world. Any rapprochement between Russia and the U.S. is an existential threat to the globalist agenda. This explains the vitriolic, hysterical, and relentless attacks on Trump and Putin. The globalists have to keep Trump and Putin separated in order to have any hope of reviving the globalist agenda.
Just as Trump and Putin are the champions of nationalism, President Xi Jinping of China and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany have emerged as the champions of the globalist camp. Understanding this dynamic requires consideration of the paradoxical roles of Xi and Merkel. Xi positions himself as the leading advocate of globalization. The truth is more complex.
President Xi is the most nationalist of all major leaders. He continually puts China’s long-term interests first without particular regard for the well-being of the rest of the world. But, China’s relative military and economic weakness, and potential social instability, require it to cooperate with the rest of the world on trade, climate change, and supply-chain logistics in order to grow. Xi is in a paradoxical position of being nationalist to the core, yet wearing a globalist veneer in order to pursue the nationalist long game.
Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany is also in a paradoxical position – but the opposite of Xi’s role. Merkel knows Germany must embrace globalism both because of its unique historical burden of being the source of three major wars (Franco-Prussian, World War I, and World War II), and the necessity of German integration with the EU and Eurozone. At the same time, Merkel has advanced her globalist agenda by promoting German interests through exports and cheap foreign labor.
For the globalists, the world breaks down into Manichean struggle between the nationalists, Trump and Putin, and the globalists, Xi and Merkel. Globalists may be playing a two-sided game of nationalists versus globalists, but they need to widen the lens to see that the world today is really a three-party game.
There are really only three superpowers in the world today – Russia, China and the U.S. All other nations are secondary or tertiary powers who may be aligned with a superpower, neutral or independent, but who otherwise lack the ability to impose their will on others.
Some analysts may be surprised to see Russia on the superpower list, but the facts are indisputable. Russia is the twelfth largest economy in the world, has the largest landmass, is one of the three largest energy producers in the world, has abundant natural resources other than oil, has advanced weapons and space technology, an educated workforce and, of course, has the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons of any country.
Russia has enormous problems including adverse demographics, limited access to oceans, harsh weather, and limited fertile soil. Yet, none of these problems negate Russia’s native strengths. Notwithstanding the prospect of improved relations, Putin remains the geopolitical chess master he has always been. His long game involves the accumulation of gold, development of alternative payments systems, and ultimate demise of the dollar as the dominant global reserve currency.”

The obvious question is if Macron is so unsure of the strikes he is deliberating on why even order them?
The BEST GUARANTEE that SYRIA’ ALLIES WON’T RESPOND…IS…NOT TO ATTACK SYRIA.

The General Staff of the RUSSIAN ARMED FORCES REVEALED the RESULTS of ANALYSIS of SYRIAN DOUMA SOIL TAKEN IMMEDIATELY AFTER ….the ALLEGED CHEMICAL ATTACK.
“I want to emphasize that ON APRIL 9, A DAY AFTER the ALLEGED CHEMICAL ATTACK in the DOUMA, RUSSIAN MILITARY SPECIALISTS in the field of radiation, chemical and biological defense, as well as military doctors ARRIVED DIRECTLY TO THE SITE of the ALLEGED INCIDENT, ” First Deputy Head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Viktor Poznihir said.
He noted that THE EXPERTS “TOOK SOIL SAMPLES, collected fragments from the so-called place of the alleged chemical weapons attack,” stressing that
THEIR EXPERTISE “SHOWED the ABSENCE of NERVE AGENTS and CHLORINE-CONTAINING POISONOUS SUBSTANCES.”
“As a result of the examination of the territory, the visit to the medical facility shown on the set of the White Helmets, the interview of the medical staff and the patients, neither facts of the use of poisonous substances nor injured among the inhabitants of this city were detected,” he stressed.
Comment: This is consistent with the fact that the WHITE HELMETS WERE AGAIN FOUND….NOT WEARING PROTECTIVE GEAR…DURING THE ALLEGED INCIDENT.
The experts have investigated the reports that appeared in early April, when several media outlets, citing Syrian militants, accused Damascus of carrying out a chemical weapons attack in the town of Douma.
The First Deputy Head specified Moscow’s steps to ensure security in the area amid the standoff over the alleged chemical attack, by saying that the Russian military police will be deployed in the Syrian town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta on April 12.
“Starting tomorrow, in order to ensure security, maintain law and order and organize assistance to the local population units of the Russian military police will be deployed in the town of Douma,” Poznikhir said.
Situation in Eastern Ghouta: Hazram Poisonous Substances Workshop
However, he recalled the Russian Military reports on the possible chemical attack by militants in the area, speaking about a militant workshop for the production of explosive items with poisonous substances that has been found in the Syrian town of Hazram at the beginning of March, according to Armed Forces of the Russian Federation General Staff.

“One such example (on the provocations) was the discovery on March 3 of one of the underground tunnels in the town of Hazram, which turned out to be a militant workshop of for the backyard production of explosives with poisonous substances,” he said.

CHINA’S MILITARY ARRIVE IN SYRIA to help Russia !
CHINA BE HELPING OUT THE SYRIAN GOVERNMENT IN THE FIGHT AGAINST I$LAMIC STATE (IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS) BY SENDING “MILITARY ADVISERS,” media reports have claimed.
“MORE CHINESE TROOPS WILL BE ARRIVING N THE COMING WEEKS,” a Syrian army official told the Lebanon-based news website Al-Masdar Al-‘Arabi. The report claims that a Chinese naval vessel is on its way to Syria with dozens of “military advisers” on board. They will reportedly be followed by troops. The ship is said to have passed the Suez Canal in Egypt and be making its way through the Mediterranean Sea.
According to the website, THE ADVISERS WILL BE JOINING THE RUSSIAN TROOPS IN THE LATAKIA AREA.
Meanwhile, an Israeli military news website, DEBKAfile, has cited military sources as saying that A CHINESE AIRCRAFT CARRIER, the Liaoning-CV-16, HAS ALREADY BEEN SPOTTED AT THE SYRIAN PORT of TARTUS ON THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST.
IT WAS SAID TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY A GUIDED MISSILE CRUISER.
The news comes after RUSSIA, IRAN, IRAQ and SYRIA AGREED TO ESTABLISH A JOINT INFORMATION CENTER IN BAGHDAD TO CO-ORDInATE THEIR OPERATIONS against Islamic State militants, according to sources. “The main GOAL of the CENTER WILL BE GATHERING, PROCESSING and ANALYZING CURRENT INFORMATION ABOUT THE SITUATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST – primarily for fighting IS,” a military-diplomatic source told Russian news agencies on Saturday.

PUTIN REITERATED HIS SUPPORT FOR SYRIA’S REGULAR ARMY – the army of President Bashar Assad. “He [Assad] is confronted with what some of our international partners interpret as an opposition. In reality, ASSAD’S ARMY IS FIGHTING AGAINST TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS,” PUTIN SAID.
