Quality of life degrades with population rise

As population rises, Americans see their freedoms erode, their environment degrade and their “quality of life” diminish on multiple levels. While people existing in large cities experience a lowered quality of life, few seem to understand the accelerating consequences across our country.

The greater our population, the more we must walk between concrete-walled skyscrapers on asphalt pavement.  We breathe fumes from gas-burning cars, exhaust vents from every building and the sheer compaction of humanity around us.

Our species developed as hunter-gatherers for tens of thousands of years. We enjoyed wide-ranging freedoms of wilderness, clean air and clean water from lakes and streams.  Today, we abruptly turn ourselves into city dwellers stacked on top of each other and crowding each other in our relentlessly growing cities.   Our quality of life degrades into gridlocked traffic, walking on concrete our whole lives, breathing air we can see and enduring endless honking horns, blaring music, sirens, gun shots and irritating if not totally crazy neighbors.

If you examine large cities, you find degraded quality of life, but worse, you see schools in chaos, neighborhoods run over in violence, kids living in unnatural surroundings and a lack of understanding of the natural world.  Americans spend $100 billion annually in drug money and more in booze money to get out of their heads into an altered state of mind, i.e., stoned, drunk or medicated.

Notice that cities house the most people visiting marriage counselors, shrinks and, at the same time, consuming endless pills such as Excedrin, Aleve, Prozac, Vicadin and aspirin.  This exemplifies our 21^st century American quality of life.

By adding 100 million people to the United States within the next 25 years, do you think we can create a better quality of life for any of our citizens?  How about the wildlife?  How about personal freedom?

We see the results of population acceleration in communities across the country where two out of every three Americans suffer overweight or obesity.  That could come from lack of time for exercise or it could come from so much stress from lack of quality of life. I contend that our current afflictions of emotional health problems, obesity and popping millions of pills indicate our loss of connection with the natural world.  Millions of people lose quality of life because of the speed of life in our overcrowded cities.  Countless Americans work jobs that lack any connection to quality of life.  

NBC anchor Brian Williams, reported in June 2009, that 1.2 million teens hit America’s streets every June unable to read or write.  Detroit, Michigan epitomizes this country’s educational dilemma with a reported 76 percent dropout/flunkout rate.  Dozens of our mega-cities across the country suffer 50 percent dropout rates. CNN reported on August 30, 2010, “7,000 American high school students drop out every day; one every 26 seconds.”

Continuing on our current population-explosion path can only create more headlines of the consequences of gorging our cities with ever greater numbers of people.  At no time, can quality of life be enhanced by adding more and more people to our already overcrowded country.

Think about quality of life and what it will mean to future generations.  Think about what you can do to change course toward a more viable, sustainable and quality civilization.  Your actions today will ensure quality of life for future generations because you cared enough to take action.  You can start at www.CapsWeb.org
