Overpopulation: The Ultimate Problem Facing Humanity in the 21st Century

By Frosty Wooldridge

With my bicycle travels around the planet from the Arctic to the Antarctic, I witnessed humanity’s many troubles up close and personal.  No amount of excuses or justifications will save us from what Nobel Laureate Dr. Henry W. Kendal said, “If we don’t halt population growth with justice and compassion, it will be done for us by nature, brutally and without pity – and will leave a ravaged world.”

While we Western world citizens enjoy our temporary “plentiful living”, few of us understand that 2.5 billion to 3.0 billion people do not enjoy a toilet or running water.  Those same people live in abject poverty where starvation kills 10 million children and 8 million adults annually.  Without pause!

Around the world, the “Sixth Extinction Session” accelerates as humans obliterate habitat to the tune of 80 to 100 animal extinctions daily.  As we humans add one billion of ourselves, net gain, every 12 years, we destroy millions upon millions of acres of habitat around the world. Thus, more creatures suffer extinction.  When it comes to our oceans, we poison and throw our plastic trash endlessly into the depths where marine creatures live.

Even in America with its resource devouring 315 million citizens and on toward adding 100 million within 25 years while it doubles to 625 million near the end of this century, the U.S. Forest Service projects 36 million acres of American forests will be lost to sprawl by 2050.

While I witnessed the Amazon rainforests burning and being clear cut, more and more world travelers and demographic experts speak up to give more voice the issue of human overpopulation.

On such expert, Las Vegas, Nevada demographic expert Jason Brent spoke to me this week:

“Billions of words and thousands of books have been written and thousands of conferences and meetings have been held about the problems facing humanity in its struggle for survival,” said Brent. “However, not one of them examined the only problem, the ultimate problem, facing humankind. Since the earth is finite and since the resources which permit our civilization to function are finite, at some point in time both population and economic growth must cease.

(Human garbage and plastics inundate every corner of the planet. Humans poison and trash the natural world.) Photography by www.fotosearch.com

“We can debate at what levels and at what times they must cease, but we cannot debate the fact that they both must cease. To use a ridiculous example to make the point—our planet could not support a population of 7 trillion (one thousand times as large as the current population of 7 billion) and our planet could not support an economy 1,000 times as large as the current economy and that level would be achieved in about 280 years, if the economy were to grow at 2.5 percent per year.

“Once the peak level of economic activity level is reached only two things can happen—economic activity can remain at the peak or it can decline. It cannot increase, because if it could increase it would not be at the peak and that would assume continuous and infinite economic growth which cannot happen on the finite earth.”

“The raging monster upon the land is population growth. In its presence, sustainability is but a fragile theoretical construct.  To say, as many do, that the difficulties of nations are not due to people, but to poor ideology and land-use management is sophistic.”  Harvard scholar and biologist E.O. Wilson

“Economic activity will not remain at the peak due to the fact that humanity is using up the resources that permit our civilization to function and when one or more of those resources are no longer economically or physically available economic activity will decline,” said Brent. “If economic activity declines population will decline and no action taken by humanity will prevent that decline.”

“A decline in population will result in Darwinian “survival of the fittest.”  There will be a struggle between every individual, family, tribe, group, religion and nation against every other individual, family, tribe, group, religion and nation to obtain the resources necessary for survival. Humanity’s concepts of morality, justice, charity and everything else we hold dear will be destroyed by the need for survival. The “morality” or “immorality” of nature will destroy what humanity perceives to be moral and just.

“Therefore, the only, the ultimate, problem facing humanity is to reduce our population as quickly as possible with the least amount of death and destruction and to determine who will be permitted to reproduce when the population contraction commences in the very near future.”

The green revolution was instigated as a result of the efforts of Norman Borlaug, who, while accepting the Nobel peace prize in 1970, said: “The green revolution has won a temporary success in man’s war against hunger and deprivation; it has given man a breathing space. If fully implemented, the revolution can provide sufficient food for sustenance during the next three decades. But the frightening power of human reproduction must also be curbed; otherwise the success of the green revolution will be ephemeral only.”

“Compared to the problem described above every other problem faced by humanity is irrelevant and unimportant because if the problem described above is not solved billions will die due to the decline in economic activity which will cause continuous wars until the population is reduced to the level the declining economic activity can support.”

Assuming that the growth rate is constant is foolish, are our growth patterns the same now as in 1913, no, so to project 280 years down the line current numbers, is arbitraty speculation at best

Currently, everyone in the world could fit inside of australia, while being given 1 square block each. We make enough food for 10 billion a year, have 7 billion on the planet, and several billion fall asleep hungry at least sometimes. Resources are not our problem, organization, execution, lack of proper allocation, and lack of common decency are the real problems. Not all of this is accidental.

      Again!
You never answered my question when I commented on your last, suspiciously similar article.

Are you being paid to produce this? Youve been explained to by several people now that the statements you have continued to make are not factually correct.

As one of the comments below states every man women and child could be given a quarter acre
and still have a third of Australia left over not to mention the rest of the planet. This blog is dissinfo everything is based on scarcity all patents to help mankind have been suppressed. 24000 children die everyday of starvation. Yet no one adresses this issue I guess we are to busy making the war machine work. Well my friends the jig is up the fluoride in the water, nutritionless food, spraying from aircraft … its going to crash down on your heads. I feel sorry for you karma or what goes around comes around waits for you.We are here now and planetary slavery of money is coming to an end you know this.Your only hope is to disarm the people because they will hunt you down.
