Is it Time for Social Media Alternatives?

This past week there has been some revelations of how the “Big Tech” companies have decided to feel that they are now able to sensor individuals and hamper the voices of those that the ideology does not fit into the mold of their perceptions of reality. We were able to witness a coordinate censoring of an alternative media outlet called Infowars founded by Alex Jones, in which their channel and content were removed from social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, Apple and Spotify. According to the companies that have decided to take this course of action against Infowars had stated that the reason it was due to violation of its policy of use and services. Along with these claims there has been other allegations from various conservatives making claims that Twitter had been shadow banning them and that it seemed that this was more prevalent with conservatives than liberals.

The question must arise that due to the nature of the positions that these companies are beginning to engage in activities of censoring individuals and or groups based on what seems to be ideological stances hidden behind a facade of policy and users agreements, do we now require new platforms that can rival Facebook, Twitter and Youtube? These companies have the right to determine how to operate their services and the direction in which they see fit.  Just as we have the right to decide and agree to use their products based on the terms that they dictate for using a “free” product. Due to what could possibly snowball into an avalanche of filtered censoring, what options exists outside of what so many people engage and use day in and day out.

It is no secret that most of these SM platforms tend to favor or lean their ideology towards the left. By the actions that we are currently seeing if you are not of that ideology or share those same views there is no outlet in which can be utilized to balance the “Social Scales”. The question that should be the most obvious to those witnessing the genesis of what could be a slippery slope is, where are those that have the resources to erect alternative platforms that can balance the social scales. Not only would this be an opportunity for a competitive market of SM’s, it could provide the avenue in which an option is available to those that feel that they should not be held hostage to what we currently have.   

Could we see the new Facebook, Twitter or YouTube spring into existence due to the actions of those that may engage in the further censorship? Who will have the courage and obviously the resources to execute such an endeavor and will it happen before it is too late?
