Act now and urge the SCC to deny APCo’s attempt to limit renewable energy in Virginia.

Appalachian Power Company (APCo) has proposed that it be the exclusive seller of a 100 percent renewable energy program in its service territory. The program would charge customers a premium but would fail to add any new clean energy to the grid. Instead, the company would repackage electricity already being purchased from hydroelectric and wind facilities out of state.

Not only would APCo’s program add zero new renewable energy to the grid, it actually threatens to remove some existing renewable power from Virginia. If the State Corporation Commission approves this program, APCo’s monopoly would be extended to these types of renewable programs and could force out competition from existing and developing clean energy providers. More information is available here.

Public utilities should offer 100 percent renewable energy options, but those programs should drive new clean power generation in Virginia. They should not threaten to take clean power off the grid.

Take action now and urge the State Corporation Commission to reject APCo’s proposal.
