BIN Paranormal Exclusive: Interview With ORBS (Omaha Research Beyond The Supernatural)

Its Autumn 2011 and once again I am doing a series of interviews with paranormal investigators, ghost hunters, authors, psychics and more around the United States to get an inside look in the world of paranormal investigation. The modern day interest in the paranormal began with the debut of SYFY’s “Ghost Hunters” in 2004. Since then numerous other shows have appeared on TV, and hundreds of groups around the United States have been formed to help people deal with hauntings and to find concrete proof that ghosts exist. I recently sat down with 4 members of ORBS (Omaha Research Beyond the Supernatural) based out of Omaha, Nebraska on Facebook for an inside look on what they do.

“ORBS, or Omaha Research Beyond the Paranormal, was founded in 2007. Through our investigations, we hope to bring a better understanding of the unknown. With open minds, we use scientific procedures, professional equipment, and various methods of documentation including written, visual, and audio evidence to conduct investigations. We realize that many “hauntings” or “paranormal” experiences can have alternative explanations and don’t automatically assume all evidence proves a haunting exists.”

The ORBS team is made up of Cody B. (Field Investigator), Tim B. (Site Administrator and Lead Investigator), Kerry J. (Lead Investigator and Evidence Specialist), Jan J. (HIstorian) and Dee T. (Medium). I was able to interview 4 members of the team (Cody, Tim, Kerry and Jan)

BIN: For Cody: Can you tell my readers alittle bit about ORBS and what you do?

Cody-ORBS: We are very scientific in our methods and we try to help homeowners and business owners find out what is there. We come from different backgrounds and utilize the skills we have to assist in evidence collections.

BIN: For Tim: Take us through the stages of a basic investigation for ORBS

Tim-ORBS: We do a preliminary, we have a questionairre that we ask of all persons involved, we have contracts that everyone signs for protection of all parties. We explain equipment and procedures and then we set up. We look at the hot spots and perimeter and focus our cameras on many angles. We adjust our investigation to the actions of the activity.

BIN: For Jan: What 3 places has ORBS investigated that had the most interesting history?

Jan-ORBS: Villisca House, Joslyn Castle, and a private residence that I cannot disclose. The Villisca Axe Murder House in Villisca IA is one of the most interesting and active places we have been. The pics flashing on the screen now are from Villisca. There is quite a bit of the evidence we have caught on our website. The other i’d definitely say is a private residence in northeast nebraska and there is also quite a bit of evidence for that location on our website as well.

BIN: For Kerry: I’m looking at photographic evidence ORBS has captured on your livestream channel, If I were to ask you to show me evidence that ghosts exist, what would you show me?

Kerry-ORBS: We cannot ever say that something is truly paranormal. We can say that it is an anomaly and that it is not normal. Our EVP’s speak the loudest and unfortunately this is still a work in progress for every group. We do know that spirits do interact. And they interact with us too. We have an evp where you hear a spirit ask “can they hear us?”

BIN: For Cody: Your group utilizes a psychic for your investigations. It is an ongoing debate in the paranormal community about the credibility and usefulness of having one when most people may not believe what the psychic says so my question is, Why does ORBS?

Cody-ORBS: Ok, Dee is a sensitive and doesn’t feel like she has any psychic abilities. She has been able to come up with

things that the homeowner never told us. Like songs that were important to the siblings and how a person died and names. ORBS is an acryonym that we chose, but doesn’t mean that we believe that ORBS in pictures are necessarily paranormal. In hindsight, maybe not the best name because people automatically assume that all dots in pictures are paranormal.

BIN: For Kerry: What is the best investigation ORBS has ever done as far as capturing evidence goes and what did you capture?

Kerry-ORBS: Villisca and the undisclosed location are the best. We have captured voices, video, and heard sounds with our own ears that lead us to believe that there is something out there. Villisca is always a treasure and we have gone over 7 times. The undisclosed location is very active and has proven to us that they know who we are. There is a man there that says Cody’s name!

BIN: For Jan: Every paranormal team out thee has a wish list of places they would love to investigate, Where would ORBS like to go?

ORBS-Jan: If we had the time and it wasn’t so far away, I would love to go to Waverly Hills sanitarium or The Myrtles Plantation.

BIN: For Tim: What is your favorite piece of equipment to use and why?

Tim-ORBS: I prefer anything that is visual because it documents everything that is paranormal and backs up any audio evidence. An example for this is a recent private residence and ourselves heard singing that sounded paranormal but it turned out to be the homeowner. We know this because we saw her on camera. Villisca – we heard screams on the recorders. When watching it back, we saw that nobody was in the house. The people outside didn’t hear a thing which proves it came from inside. You can’t rely on just one piece of equipment. You have to watch the video back and listen to the evp’s and take all aspects into consideration. We have found after looking at video that what we thought might be an evp wasn’t so having the two together is a great way to be sure what you are getting is real or not. We often use multiple voice recorders in a room to see if the same evidence is caught on both

BIN: This is for all you: Why is ORBS different than other groups out there?

Cody-ORBS: We take a very and I mean VERY scientific approach. We alter nothing. If we think for one second that it’s questionable, we don’t post it. We come from different backgrounds and different fields and we put all of that to use. We use various equipment and test it all. We have had the luxury of testing equipment at our undisclosed location and trying differnt methods to ensure accuracy. We’re all pretty skeptical too, so we often use multiple devices that do the same thing (multiple types of voice recorders or EMF meters) to see if we can back up what we are getting. We aren’t in this for money. We charge nothing to investigate anywhere and pay for some of our investigations (Villisca for example). Kerry works hours of overtime to pay for equipment and we never charge. Our team has gone to Minnesota for a conference and we’ve done all day bus tours, and we are teaching at UNO (University of Nebraska at Omaha) in a matter of weeks. It’s not about the glory, it’s about the evidence.

ORBS-Jan: so, if one meter triggers, why does, or doesnt another one in the same spot. we often have the different metetrs lined up right by each other. another way we try to be as accurate as possible every little noise doesn’t make us all freaky and scared like you see some groups on tv do. theatrics and “acting” for the camera are not who we are that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun, because let’s face it, after 6 hours of investigating, boredom happens. Jan and I seem to be the comic relief.

BIN: one more question, for everyone again: Any future plans for ORBS? (investigations, radio, events etc.)

Cody-ORBS: We plan to go to UNO on the 22nd and that could potentially be live. We also have a private residence coming up on the 1st of October.
