Bishop Daniel E. Flores' talk on exorcisms now available for free download

On November 21, 2011, Bishop Daniel E. Flores spoke before more than 100 young adults about exorcism. In his opening remarks, Bishop Flores said: “One of the reasons I chose the topic of exorcism is because I figured it was sure to draw a crowd.”

The talk was held at Roosevelt’s at 7, a local pub in McAllen, Texas [map]; and was part of an ongoing ‘Theology on Tap’ speaker series organized by the Brownsville Diocese’s Campus and Young Adult Ministry.

Thankfully for those interested, the talk had been recorded by the Brownsville Dioceses’ newspaper, The Valley Catholic; and was recently made publicly available by the Texas Catholic Conference.

“Is the Church afraid of the devil? No,” Bishop Flores said. “Why? Because we believe in the triumph of God’s mercy by the blood of Christ on the cross.”

Possession is fairly rare. Bishop Flores revealed that, in his nearly 25 years as a priest, he’s had plenty of people tell him they think they’re possessed; but has yet to encounter the need for an exorcism.

Bishop Flores focused most of his discussion on the more common, but less known occurrence of “demonic obsession.” This is oppressive harassment by demons outside of the person. (Who wants to see a movie about someone being merely pestered by the devil? Talk about boring.)
