11/22/2014: On this day, Deanna Jaxine Stinson – my wife – co-owner of Halo Paranormal Investigations and sensitive decided to investigate the town of Angel’s Camp. Our first stop was Altaville Grammar School, that was erected in 1858. This historical landmark was a school up to 1950. It is now Historical Landmark #499. Linda Derringer makes claim that one time at 3am, she heard the sounds of children playing and when she looked up at Altaville Grammar School, she saw 3 children running around the school and she can distinctly remember seeing a little girl with a blue dress on. Deanna and I, conducted our own investigation of the school and found no evidence of the paranormal, of course it was in the afternoon, not at 3am.

Angel’s Camp has a lot to offer. Tourists walk up and down Main Street and visiting shops like the Prestidge Gallery and Frame Shop on 1234 South Main Street. This shop has been around for 15 years and boasts paintings from notable local artist Leslie Harrison, who is known worldwide for painting horses. Near this gallery is Nellie Lou’s Antiques. Shirley Becker says that this antique shop has been around for 26 years and it’s located at 1254 S. Main Street.

“Angels Camp, also known as City of Angels and formerly Angel’s Camp, Angels, Angels City, Carson’s Creek and Clearlake, is the only incorporated city in Calaveras County, California, United States. The population was 3,835 at the 2010 census, up from 3,004 at the 2000 census. It lies at an elevation of 1378 feet (420 m).

Mark Twain based his short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” on a story he claimed he heard at the Angels Hotel in 1865. The event is commemorated with a Jumping Frog Jubilee each May at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds, just east of the city. Because of this, Angels Camp is sometimes referred to as “Frogtown.”

Cami & Karen

Sam Clemens aka Mark Twain in 1864 heard a story by Ben Coon in some saloon about a frog and some buckshot. This inspired Sam Clemens to write the Jumping Frog of Calavera’s County. Sam Clemens lived in a cabin built by Dick Stoker and Jim Gillis by Jackass Hill. In 1928 the Jumping Frog Contest commenced and over 15,000 people showed up to watch this event. Special Note: Angel’s Camp was founded in 1849 by George Angel. Angel’s Camp was first established as a mining camp and trading post.

While Deanna and I were interviewing people and doing some sideline investigating, we met up with Karen Noring and her Pekinese Mr. Jones and his small stuffed chicken that he would like to carry in his mouth. Mr. Jones and Chicken were happy to show Deanna and I around!
Karen tells us that in the building she resides in she sees strange lights and she was happy to bring us into this home. We met her friend Cami Trueheart, who is 62 years old and is originally from Piedmont. Cami says that she has lived in Angel’s Camp for 3 years and she is an intuitive. Cami feels that high class French girls were brought into the apartment structure that was once a brothel. Cami has heard 4 or 5 ladies of the night in her home. Cami says that the building once had a parlor at the front of the building, the street below is where the Chinese laborers would live and the sloths aka low class prostitutes would also stay. There were terraced gardens nearby and there was a bar in the brothel. Cami has never seen the strange lights throughout this apartment complex, but her friend Karen has.

Cami entertained us by playing her guitar and singing a crawdad song in which she bellowed out like Janis Joplin. Cami is a very good singer and she once opened for the Café Montreal in Sacramento with her band Hazel Atlas for Cake. She once saw Janis Joplin in the middle of Ball and Chain. She has been in Calaveras County since 1979 and has raised 5 children. She was quite the character and we enjoyed her company and her friend’s company, they were both very hospitable. Mr. Jones walked us out to the exit door, what a loveable dog.

Deanna and I ended this day by investigating Elliot Cemetery in which Deanna felt something touch the back left side of her head.
