The Next Voice You Hear

THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR

Sunday morning, I was awakened by the ringing telephone. I answered and it was a friend telling me that Nancy Reagan passed away. He wasn’t a big fan of Nancy’s but he knew that one of my favorite films had her in it. Being a B movie lover, there was a film that I really enjoyed from the 1950’s called, “The Next Voice You Hear.”

It is a film in which a voice claiming to be that of God preempts all radio programs for days all over the world. It stars James Whitmore and Nancy Reagan, then known as Nancy Davis. Their characters are Joe and Mary Smith, a typical American couple. It was based on a short story of the same name by George Sumner Albee. The voice is never heard by the audience.

The frustration that I had with the film is the protagonist of the film, Joe Smith, would tell everyone he heard a voice speak to him through his radio and when he tried to find others to listen, some unforeseen circumstances would come up and the person wouldn’t hear the voice.

The voice comes on one evening while he is relaxing listening to the radio. Instead of the familiar radio show coming on, there is a voice who says, “He is God.” The message is, “This is God. I’ll be with you for the next few days.” We never really hear the voice, but we see the farmer is shaken and he is telling his wife and son what happened.

Mary, Joe’s wife tells her husband that she feels it is a hoax, like one of those radio shows that Mr. Welles created. Of course she is referring to Orson Welles, War of The Worlds broadcast.

The next day is typical, in that life went on but this time the lunch conversation is about the voice. It is revealed that the voice was heard on every radio station at the same time. The FCC is looking into it, as investigating whether there was a break in at the local radio station.

And so it goes, for 6 nights, each time with a short message from God. Some people react with fear, and others with scorn, but Joe is struck by the intrusion of the supernatural into his life, and begins to examine himself.

Even though the movie is solidly set in a time over 60 years ago, it seems timeless. After all, who can’t relate to living life as you do, and suddenly being confronted with the fact that something other worldly is speaking to you, which forces an inner conflict and soul searching.

We have all had that feeling something or someone has been trying to communicate with us. While the film “The Last Voice You Hear: is about a voice claiming it is God—we have seen many times over the years where films have tried to convey the message that we are not alone.

Today in films, God does not speak through radios, but extra-terrestrials do and while many people are expecting a voice that sounds human speaking to them through a radio telescope. The reality may be as simple as a few chirps and warbles.

In the 1997 film, Contact, there was a message sent to Earth, by extra-terrestrials that was interlaced with data. The message was Hitler’s speech during the 1936 Olympics which had scientists worried.

The communication at first sounded like scrapes and chirps and after the data was analyzed it was learned that embedded in the data was footage of a swastika imprinted flag waving over the stadium where the Olympics were held.

The message of the film was very similar to the one in, The Next Voice You Hear, and when contact is made, will it be an experience that will be spiritual or will it be something more tangible?

It doesn’t matter if you believe or don’t believe in aliens or UFO’s, the cultural awakening to the possibility is as vibrant and valid as a belief or non- belief in God. Mythologies are sacred in some circles and in others, dismissed, yet the archetypes in them never leave us. They continue in other forms and with even more manifestation that leaves skeptics curious and hardens the resolve of the true believers.

Myths based on truths are what shape world view. Myths also shape world spiritual views and within religious and the political spectrum those views are powerful determinants in what we as a people feel is good or evil.

Jacques Vallée has pointed out, “If UFOs are acting at the mythic and spiritual level it will be almost impossible to detect it by conventional methods.” However, in the political and scientific world, this will not stand and many skeptics will not be satisfied until they are able to kick the tires and honk the horn of an extra-terrestrial urban transport vehicle.

On numerous occasions, photographs and video have been presented for scrutiny. There have been allegations of physical effects on humans. We have collected radar data that there are radiation signatures left behind wherever these craft are seen and also the reports of abductees that report physical trauma.

To say the phenomenon has not had an effect on the cultural world view is disingenuous.

To also say that all scientists have dismissed the idea of extra-terrestrials communicating with us would also be a fallacy.

In the early 1970s, NASA launched two space probes – Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11, with the mission of exploring the large gas planets, the asteroid belt, and the outer reaches of the solar system. In addition to outfitting the spacecrafts with an array of scientific instruments, the astronauts also thought it would be a good idea to tack on a message to extra-terrestrials because after all, you never know.

Famed astronomers Carl Sagan and Frank Drake designed the Pioneer Plaque. The plaque is a six inch by nine inch gold anodized tablet, depicting diagrams of the universe (just in case the aliens need a map), a schematic of hydrogen (the most plentiful element in the universe), as well as pictures of a couple of naked people — once again, why not? Identical copies of the plaque were bolted to the frames of each spacecraft.

According to NASA:

“Pioneers 10 and 11, which preceded Voyager, both carried small metal plaques identifying their time and place of origin for the benefit of any other extraterrestrials that might find them in the distant future. With this example before them, NASA placed a more ambitious message aboard Voyager 1 and 2 – a kind of time capsule, intended to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials. The Voyager message is carried by a phonograph record – a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth.”

“The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University and Frank Drake. Dr. Sagan and his associates assembled 115 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind and thunder, birds, whales, and other animals. To this they added musical selections from different cultures and eras, and spoken greetings from Earth-people in fifty-five languages, and printed messages from President Carter and U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim.”

“Each record is encased in a protective aluminum jacket, together with a cartridge and a needle. Instructions, in symbolic language, explain the origin of the spacecraft and indicate how the record is to be played. The 115 images are encoded in analog form. The remainder of the record is in audio, designed to be played at 16-2/3 revolutions per minute. It contains the spoken greetings, beginning with Akkadian, which was spoken in Sumer about six thousand years ago, and ending with Wu, a modern Chinese dialect. Following the section on the sounds of Earth, there is an eclectic 90-minute selection of music, including both Eastern and Western classics and a variety of ethnic music.”

It was most certainly a technological version of the message in a bottle.

NASA lost contact with Pioneer 10 in 2003 and then Pioneer 11 in 2005, and while they both provided loads of insight about our solar system, we’ve yet to answer the big question: can aliens understand our bizarre drawings? Some argue that the symbols are too abstract for an alien intelligence to comprehend, while others worry that we’re giving potentially dangerous life forms a direct map to our planet.

Around the same time as the Pioneer launches, astronomers were also toying with the idea of using focused, amplified radio waves to connect with unearthly beings. They knew that radio waves were less affected by cosmic dust than light, and they also figured out how to direct radio waves at targeted points many light years into space. For these reasons, it seemed that radio was the best way to reach out into the depths of the universe and deliver a message.

Once again, Frank Drake and Carl Sagan teamed up to concoct another human-to-alien communication. This time their message consisted of seven parts, including an image of a human, the structure of DNA, atomic numbers of common elements, and the numbers one to ten. They transmitted the communication in binary digits, with all the zeroes and ones represented by two different frequencies.

Apparently, scientists in the 1970s were heck-bent on chatting with extra-terrestrials, or at least future humans. In 1977, for example, NASA released a third major cosmic-bound message using the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes. Yet again, Carl Sagan and team came up with what they thought aliens would most need to know, and encoded the information onto two, twelve-inch gold-plated gramophone records (one for each space probe). The records contain sounds of nature, various languages, a variety of images, music, and other things meant to sum up life on Earth.

The cover of the records are engraved with many of the same images found on the Pioneer Plaque, except that NASA omitted the nude man and woman since so many people complained about it the first time around. Directions on how to use the record are also included, as well as a needle and cartridge for playback.

Many years since, we have been waiting for some indication the parcels we sent out into space have attracted extra-terrestrials and that perhaps they would take the time and try to communicate back with us.

Many people who see themselves as religious may find the reality of extra-terrestrials threatening and have resolved to calling it a lie, or a staged manipulation in order to create a necessity for a globalist government that is united against a manufactured enemy from heaven. It can be intimidating to realize that mankind is now being programmed to turn to the outer world as a group for answers to the question of the alien reality.

This may not be for our benefit.

Even renowned physicist, Stephen Hawking has weighed in on the “alien” question and says he most definitely believes that aliens exist. He has stated that “If aliens visit us, the outcome could be much like when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach.”

While Hawking has given warning about our first contact, he also has engaged in a bit of doublethink by putting up the money necessary to finance the ongoing quest to communicate or otherwise intercept messages from extra-terrestrials.

This seems to have presented a dubious paradox or a contradictory stance on whether we should or should not bait the aliens into coming into our contemporary world.

Well I believe it may be too late, with all of the diagrams and gold records we have sent into space and with all of the radio telescopes giving an ear to the cosmos and sending out signals – the hook has already been baited and we are being told that within 10 years we will know for sure if aliens are communicating with us.

I wonder though, what are we expecting to hear from the extra-terrestrials?

I ask this question because I have been reading a lot of stories in the science pages which have talked about signals that are being sent and then, they are being repeated.

And while the sounds are not voices – they certainly indicate the heavens are sending us various sounds and data streams that perhaps we need to analyze and try to decipher.

Fast radio bursts have been talked about before and many of the stories about them have been given the back page treatment. However, while the sounds were written off as a possible exploding star, the FRB’s are now repeating.

Scientists reported a huge step in locating where these mysterious cosmic radio bursts are coming from. But now their results are being called into question by others in the field.

At first, scientists believed the signals were coming from a new galaxy, but now they are claiming they are from an old familiar one – one that appears to go all the way back in time when the universe was young.

Are these signals coming to us from the past?

The intervals seem to be setting up a mathematical pattern.

Now objectively we can say that cosmic objects might, by some natural but unknown process, produce dispersions in regular steps. Small, dense remnant stars called pulsars are known to emit bursts of radio waves, though not in regular arrangements or with as much power as FRBs. But maybe super dense stars are mathematical oddities because of underlying physics we don’t understand.

It’s also possible the telescopes are picking up evidence of human technology, like an unmapped spy satellite, masquerading as signals from deep space.

The most tantalizing possibility is the source of the bursts might be a who, not a what. If none of the natural explanations pan out an artificial source (human or non-human) must be considered.

A beacon from extra-terrestrials has always been on the list of weird possible origins for these bursts.

Perhaps extra-terrestrial civilizations are trying to get our attention with basic multiplication.

In the 1940’s, science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke wrote a short story called ‘The Sentinel‘ for a BBC competition that was a compelling story about an alien artifact left on the Moon that constantly sent signals out into deep space.

The artifact was tetrahedral in shape, made of a polished metal and has a spherical force filed surrounding it. For eons, this artifact was a warning beacon to intelligent life and other space explorers that wanted to develop or come to planet Earth.

Clarke eloquently paints a picture of a powerful force that swept through space when the Earth was half of its present age. The force and the roar were incomprehensible and the beacon was left on the moon to transmit a signal for millions of years. The signal was called a sentinel and it was there to watch over Earth and other worlds that could sustain life.

The pyramid that housed the beacon was eventually destroyed by a nuclear explosion. It was concluded that whoever left the beacon has to be aware that it is no longer transmitting and may return to find out why.

The story end with a chilling speculation from the narrator:

“I can never look now at the Milky Way without wondering from which of those banked clouds of stars the emissaries are coming. If you will pardon so commonplace a simile, we have set off the fire-alarm and have nothing to do but to wait. I do not think we will have to wait for long.”

I know what was written was fiction; however, the beacon that sends a signal is now a chilling metaphor for what is happening now.

In the pages of the Bible it is written in the apocalypse that a voice out of heaven will come forward and say, Behold I am with you, and the kingdom of God will dwell with you.

When it does every tear will be wiped away from our eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

Always remember what Nancy Reagan’s husband, former President Ronald Reagan said at the United Nations about how our differences worldwide would vanish if we knew the truth about and alien presence or threat, coming from somewhere out in space.

These beacons from space are perhaps preparing us for the voice — the voice that everyone will hear telling us our transcendence has arrived.
