Why has not another more prepared expedition not been done? That is the greater mystery and solves it, actually.

Soviet secret weapons test gone awry?

No mystery. The dead were treated as Soviet heroes. And clothing from
their camp was tested for radioactivity. That tells you everything.

Krivonischenko had been involved in the Kyshtym nuclear accident clean
up. Assume he was contacted by foreign spies, who asked him for
clothing that might contain radioactive isotopes. For analysis. But
Krivonischenko was a patriot who reported the contact.

Enter Zolotariov, who was older than the others, had no connection to
their university, and was the likely KGB handler for Krivonischenko.
A rendezvous with foreign agents was planned.

But it went wrong. There was a fight. The spies were armed. This is
why a clothing item not belonging to the Russians was found. It is why
Russians slashed their way out of the tent and ran out, into the cold
      night, without getting dressed.

It explains the blunt force injuries to some of the victims. Skull
fracture. Chests that were crushed, by weight during interrogation
most likely. That’s a torture technique. Compressing the person’s
chest. And some had defensive wounds.

Dubinina had blood in her stomach, which means her tongue was cut out
while she was still living. Decay inside her mouth made it appear the
      tongue had been “pulled out.”

The mountain pass was renamed after 23 year old Dyatlov.
Krivonischenko and Zolotariov were buried in an exclusive cemetery.

There is only one explanation for ALL the facts.
