The Suicide of Judas: Demonic Art
Welcome to another day of Demon Week here at Theresa’s Haunted History of the Tri-State! I love to incorporate weird, supernatural art into my posts, so when I stumbled upon this image, I knew instantly that I wanted to included it into this week’s theme.The oil painting, called The Suicide of Judas, was completed around 1491 by Italian artist, Giovanni Canavesio.
It depicts the suicide of Judas Iscariot following his betrayal of Jesus Christ in a rather…stylized?…way. Apparently, when sinners die, the soul (which is a tiny, well-groomed, naked version of our outer body) is plucked from our chest cavity by a hairy little demon, not much bigger than our naked soul baby.
This is a pretty horrifying image today; I cannot imagine how much of an impact it must have had in the 15th century. While the demon/devil isn’t necessarily depicted as too ghastly, its still a disturbing enough image to make me rethink sinning!
The Suicide of Judas can found in the Chapel of Notre-Dame des Fontaines, near La Brigue, along with Canavesio’s other religious works. And just a quick note: Obviously this is a historical piece chosen for its demon imagery, but it is in no way intended to make light of the very serious suicide problem we are facing today. Depression affects people from every walk of life, and suicide touches our young, our celebrities, our veterans, our marginalized communities, and everyone in between—many whom you would never know by simply looking at them. I don’t see it. You can never commit another sin and you still are destined for damnation but it’s not about stopping the act (which you strive not to) but about removing the curse that sin has put on all of us. Salvation removes that curse so that you don’t take it to your grave. Take it to you grave and you can’t be allowed into a place where that doesn’t exist. Since your soul is immortal the only alternative is a place where Gods presence doesn’t exist. For those that say His presence doesn’t exist I say then there would be nothing good. All good procedes from the creator. Being in a place where good doesn’t exist is why hell is considered a place of torment because like there is no air, no moisture, no laughing, no joy and anything else you know to be a good thing. The only exceptions God makes for those that didn’t remove the curse is those that can’t be held accountable. There is only 1 way to obtain salvation because only one man has died without sin. Sin is why we die and Jesus had none yet he died and he resurrected and thus was able to become our savior. Budda, allah, cornbread, nothing else can guarantee you salvation without lying. Only Jesus can. It’s free and you don’t have to be some perfect person. Some of those closest to Him is those who where of the worst sort and He changed them. All you have to do is believe and say to jesus you want to be saved. Do that and you are guaranteed pardon. Judas hung himself because he knew Jesus was innocent and he was God in flesh. The truth makes sense when you know the real truth not what the world teaches. Like Christianity has pagan roots which is simply not true. People are told something from some ancient source and they take it as truth when it is by design to fool you. But I go to go peace
