When you dig a hole dirt gets around the edges. Even if you’re careful and place the dirt out of the hole onto a small tarp as you go, so it doesn’t mess up the grass, you still get some dirt around the hole. And we’re supposed to think the gold bars were just stacked in a hole and buried without even being in a box or wrapped.

I am familiar with the tank story and I do know a little bit about gold. Unlike most people I have actually had unsupervised access to a whole trolley load of gold ingots in a government owned mint. I have handled hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of the stuff.
If gold is 24 carat it just comes up lovely and shiny. It doesn’t matter if you just chuck it in a hole and fill it in but it’s very unlikely that anyone would do that.
