The unpredictability of presidential campaign events is a problem
My plan for today was to attend President Obama’s campaign event at the Elm Street Middle School in Nashua.
In addition to taking some photos and videos, and live tweeting the event for the LFDA, I planned to bring along my 8- year-old son. This was to be his first presidential experience.
But the always evolving and cumbersome presidential schedule wouldn’t allow for it. Quite simply, it’s not kid-friendly. Furthermore, it’s not undecided voter-friendly.
The original itinerary called for the doors to open at 12 pm, with President Obama arriving approximately one hour later. As I formed my plan on Friday, I figured we could arrive around 11:45 am, and while we might be in the back of a long-line, we would get in because of our electronic tickets [more on this later]. I’ve attended enough presidential events [Obama visit to NCC in March] to know one should arrive early to avoid logistical pitfalls. But early arrival doesn’t help much when there isn’t assigned seating. Since seating was an unknown at this point, I was prepared to gamble on a later arrival. Plus, did I really want to subject my son to 3+ hours of waiting and myself to 3+ hours of “Is he here yet?” questions?
More details of the event surfaced on Saturday morning. President Obama wasn’t scheduled to arrive until at least 2 pm. The the venue was outdoors, but seating remained a mystery. A review of the small print on my tickets revealed no guarantee of admission.
I considered this a perfect storm of unpredictability. Throw an 8-year-old in the mix and the results could be disastrous. I bailed. My son took the news in stride, and my editor thought the experience warranted a blog.
What is the point of these last minute campaign events in swing states? To whip your dedicated supporters into a frenzy or to sway undecided voters? I’m guessing it’s the latter.
Nowadays, if you want to see the president, you need to carve 6 hours out of your day, at least. That’s a significant commitment, especially when you aren’t sure which candidate is getting your vote.
Security is critical and the most important factor when determining logistics for these events. I get that. But campaign organizers might want to re-think their strategy of stacking events throughout the day.
That logic works if you believe in quantity over quality. But if a candidate truly wants to reach the undecided voter, he/she needs to reach them halfway.
