Everyone Under Surveillance

East Germany’s Secret Police would have been envious of what is probably the most thorough intelligence gathering system in the world today.  This past week, the Russia Today news site ran an expose based on an interview with a whistleblower.  William Binney is not from the Soviet Union, China or North Korea.  He’s a former long-time employee of the US National Security Agency.

Binney reports the FBI records almost everyone’s email, members of Congress included.  At this point, it seems the government does not have a good filtering system, so the data just accumulates.  That’s why the feds are building a two billion dollar data storage facility in Bluffdale, Utah.
 
The best we can tell, here’s how the system works.  When officials decide they want to go after somebody, they focus their resources on that person’s emails — something like ten years’ worth.  Don’t believe it?  Just ask General Petraeus.

Binney says the original purpose of the program was to track terrorists and alert their intended victims.  Everyone else’s email was supposedly encrypted to maintain privacy. But look what they’re doing now!  It reminds me of the movie Hook, where Robin Williams plays a Peter Pan character who has lost his way.  His friends warn him, “Peter, now you’re one of the pirates.”  Is that what’s happening with Uncle Sam?

William Binney is not giving up hope.  Seeing violations of Constitutional rights on every side, he hopes to get a case before the Supreme Court.  I’d like to be optimistic, but the justices just don’t have a very good track record when it comes to sniffing out unconstitutional behavior.
