US considers military strikes against Assad’s troops
Moscow delivers S-300 missile system to Syria for defense of Russian naval base
When we commented yesterday on the latest report that the US is once again contemplating launching a military operation targeting the Assad regime with months of faux diplomacy having irrevocable broken down between John Kerry and his Russian colleague Lavrov, we said that “since the report is, at least for now, just a trial balloon to gauge the Russian reaction to a potential US military incursion, we now wait to see what Putin’s reaction to the possibility of a US military campaign in Syria will be.” We got the answer overnight when Russia’s Defense Ministry said that a battery of Russian S-300 air defense missile launchers has been transported to Syria. Its sole purpose is to defend a Russian naval base and warships, the ministry added.
The information about the S-300’s deployment was confirmed by ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov.
“Indeed, the Syrian Arab Republic received an S-300 anti-aircraft missile system. This system is designed to ensure the safety of the naval base in [Syrian city of] Tartus and ships located in the coastal area [in Syria]…” he told the media.
Konashenkov said it is unclear why the deployment of the missile system has created such a fuss in the West.
“The S-300 is a purely defensive system and poses no threat,” he said. Of course, a defense system is precisely what the Pentagon would prefer to avoid in case an offensive attack was launched.
Konashenkov said that he recalled that before the deployment of S-300, Russia had delivered Fort air defense missile systems to Syria. The statement comes after a report by Fox news that a Russian S-300 was deployed to Syria. The media cited three US officials who claimed that Moscow “continues to ramp up its military operations in Syria.”
As RT adds, in November 2015, Moscow deployed its newest S-400 air defense missile system to Khmeimim in Syria as part of a security boost following the downing of a Russian jet by Turkey near the border with that country. At the time, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the S-400 systems are not targeting Russia’s partners, “with whom we fight terrorists in Syria together.” The S-400 is the most advanced anti-aircraft defense system in Russia.

Reports from Aleppo city | October 4th 2016
About the battle for Aleppo.
In the past two days, the pace promotion CAA in the northern part of the city and in the central areas declined, so radical movements of the front did not happen. In the north, militants slowly jostle to Laayoune quarter-Tal and Haidar, in the center, are fighting for the areas to the north of the citadel of Aleppo. Action expected deblocking strike from outside – it is marked tightening provisions in Khan Tuman, Rashidin, Kafr NAMR and Haritan. VKS Russia and Syria, in addition to the direct support of the Air Force offensive in Aleppo, treated enemy communications in the eastern areas of Idlib province to obstruct pulling reserves and disrupt logistics militants at the front to the west of Aleppo. The expected increase in air group videoconferencing Russia in Syria (+ anticipated trip to the shores of Syria’s aircraft carrier “Admiral Kuznetsevov”) must expand our toolkit as a contingent in direct support of troops, and in the framework of air strikes aimed at disrupting insurgents military infrastructure.
It should also be noted that the need to assault the dense residential and industrial buildings turned into strongholds network with underground utilities might be seriously facilitated with additional supplies of artillery systems, which would destroy the enemy’s defenses faster and more efficient and to save the lives of soldiers of the Syrian army, Hezbally and ” Liwa al-Quds. “
To the north of Aleppo, continuing Turkish ordeal associated with the Caliphate. The counter-offensive of the Caliphate was repulsed, returned all the lost villages and PAS, with the support of the Turkish armored vehicles and aircraft again moved south. About rapid roll on Al-Bab is not talking – yet solved more modest task – access to the Marais and the elimination of the projection to the east of Azaz. Probably for this purpose in recent days on the territory of Syria, an additional force of armored vehicles entered, as well as more than 1,000 Turkish troops.
Complicating the implementation of these plans in serious losses in battles with the SSA and the Caliphate, and poor stability of these units to just that, begin to recede. Kurds under the guise squeeze in Caliphate villages to the west of Al-Baba, showing that if something happens, they, too, no matter how off will move towards Rozhavy, but it is that very modest activity – Kurdish leaders fear that if SDF / YPG too obviously will be demonstrating a desire to take Al-Bab and connect its territories, Turkey will be more actively attack the Kurds, including the territory Rozhavy and canton Afrin.
The Caliphate as a whole is quite successful snare action, resulting in serious opponents of the existing numerical and technical superiority over the troops of the Caliphate in northern Syria, a month can not overcome 20-30 kilometers from Al-Bab – Turks obviously overestimated their capabilities, when in the early days “operation Euphrates shield” seriously planned to quickly get to the Al-Bab. In general, “black” may be noted competent military leadership on the part of the command, which, incidentally, does not negate their dire strategic position – sooner or later the Turks and SCA will come to Al-Baba (as an option – the Kurds of the SDF / YPG) and the chance to hold the city halifatchikov will have a little bit (1-2 month siege maximum), so all these bloody acts of terrorism (in the last month during the fighting in northern Syria killed hundreds of soldiers PAS (in “green” from the beginning of the operation, more than 350 killed, and had a loss of the Turks) and YPG, as well as civilians – most as a result of suicide attacks) and dashing attack with a shelter of “green” to the Turkish border, only lead to the postponement of the final destruction of the Caliphate in northern Syria. Sooner or later, the Turks and the Kurds dozhmut black and from then on will be dealt with together.
The main prize in this campaign, control of al-Bab. Who will control, he will have the greatest impact on the future solution to the Kurdish voprosa.Esli his capture Turkey, the Kurds are unlikely to rely on their connection areas. Kurdish activity in this direction stifle the US who do not want to sever relations with Turkey because of the Kurds. These classifications are not averse to climb and Assad, but Syria plans attack on Al-Bab from Kuveyrisa look frankly too optimistic, given the continuing problems in Hama and hard battle for Aleppo. The current situation, when the north of the Turks, the Kurds and the Caliphate are fighting each other more favorable Assad as his opponents not involved in them, and each other. Another question that sooner or later the situation will change and someone will come out of this fight victorious, whose interests have to be taken into account in the Damascus campaign 2017, the year that promises to be no less intense than the bloody campaign of 2016-th. Iraqi PM to Mosul residents: Victory is near
The US fighter jets pounded the military positions of Iraqi volunteer forces near the city of Mosul in Nineveh province on Wednesday, killing and injuring the anti-ISIL popular forces.
“A sum of 20 Iraqi Sunni tribal forces were killed and 5 others were wounded when the US warplanes hit their position in the village of Kharaeb in al-Qayyara region,” a battlefield source said.
Al-Qayyara is located approximately 300 kilometers to the North of Baghdad.
The Iraqi volunteer forces had reportedly gathered at the site when the aerial attack took place.
The US airstrikes came as the Iraqi volunteer forces warned against the US plan to increase the number of its troops in Iraq, and vowed harsh reaction to any such troops deployment.
“Increasing the number of US military men is a source of concern and the Hashd al-Shaabi will not tolerate the US redeployment,” Sayyed al-Shohada Battalions affiliated to Hashd al-Shaabi said.
On July 11, US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced that Washington would send 560 troops to Iraq to back up Mosul liberation operations.
On August 6, the US media reported that Washington will send another 400 soldiers to Iraq.
The US Department of Defense claims that there are less than 4,000 US troops in Iraq while a research by Washington Post newspaper shows that the number of US soldiers in Iraq exceeds 5,000.
On September 28, the US defense officials announced that Pentagon will dispatch another 600 ground troops to Iraq to help the country with Mosul liberation operation.
The US troops are now stationed in al-Qayyara military base located 65 kilometers to the South of Mosul.
The Iraqi volunteer forces are against the US deployment in Iraq.
Iraqi MP demand withdrawal of Turkish troops
The commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces, Hadi al-Ameri, vowed tough war against the Turkish army’s military incursion in Iraq, warning that his forces will confront any Turkish aggressor the same way they stand against the ISIL.
“The Iraqi forces will treat any foreign troops who interferes in Mosul operations exactly as ISIL terrorists; Mosul should only be liberated by the Iraqi forces,” al-Ameri said on Wednesday.
Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces further warned the Turkish army to withdraw its troops from Iraq.
On Tuesday, the Iraqi volunteer forces vowed to confront the presence of the Turkish army troops in Iraq.
“The presence of the Turkish forces in Iraq is deemed as illegal and Hashd al-Shaabi has the power to confront the Turkish occupying forces,” Iraqi Hashd al-Shaabi commander Javad al-Talibavi told FNA.
He reiterated that the Iraqi volunteer forces will not tolerate the presence of the Turkish troops in Iraq.
Ankara, in December 2015, first deployed about 150 soldiers equipped with heavy weapons and backed by two dozen tanks to Bashiqa, located on the outskirts of Mosul. It claimed the deployment was part of a mission to train and equip Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the fight against ISIL. Baghdad rejected the claim, saying it did not need the Turkish military assistance in the fight.
On Saturday, Turkish lawmakers almost overwhelmingly approved the extension by another year of Ankara’s cross-border military incursions into Syria and Iraq. During the parliamentary session, Erdogan urged allowing his country’s troops to participate in the upcoming battle for Mosul, warning Baghdad and Turkey’s Western allies that Turkey must be involved in any operation and included in the decision-making process.
“Turkey cannot be left off the table. The others don’t have such a border with Iraq. They may want us to stay as spectators but that decision is also going to be made here,” the Turkish president said.
