Hamas Regrets ICC Team’s Refusal to Visit Gaza
The Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas described as “pointless and useless” an ongoing visit by an International Criminal Court (ICC) delegation to the occupied Palestinian territories because the legal experts will not be visiting the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip. The ICC team arrived in the Palestinian territories on Wednesday and will depart on October 10, presstv reported. The legal experts are not scheduled to pay a visit to the coastal sliver of Gaza, which has been the target of several Israeli wars as well as recurrent Israeli military incursions. The ICC is conducting an investigation into the latest Israeli war on Gaza the 2014, however. The Court’s chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, has said her trip to the occupied Palestinian territories, which will take her and her entourage to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and the Central West Bank city of Ramallah, is not connected to the ongoing initial inquiry on the 2014 Gaza war. Nevertheless, in a statement released on Sunday, Hamas expressed regret at the ICC team’s refusal to visit Gaza, a decision it said had been made under the influence of Israel.
Israel Issues Administrative Detention Orders against 31 Palestinians
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said on Sunday that Israeli authorities issued administrative detention orders against 31 Palestinian detainees. The society’s lawyer Mahmoud al-Halabi said that detention orders, without charge or trial, were issued against 31 detainees, including against member of the Palestinian legislative council, Mohammed al-Natsheh, WAFA reported. The period of the detention varied between three to six months. Administrative detention is the imprisonment of Palestinians without charge or trial and on the basis of secret evidence for up to six month periods, indefinitely renewable by Israeli military courts. Palestinian detainees have continuously resorted to open-ended hunger strikes as a way to protest their illegal administrative detention and to demand an end to this policy which violates international law.
