ABC’s Stephanopoulos Wants Trump Impeached
That didn’t take long. ABC’s George Stephanopoulos raised the prospect of the impeaching Donald Trump during the Thursday edition of “Good Morning America.”
According to the Media Research Center’s News Busters, during a discussion about the multiple civil lawsuits pending against Trump, Stephanopoulos stated, “if he takes the risk of going to trial and he’s convicted, that could be seen as an impeachable offense.”
ABC legal analyst Dan Abrams responded to Stephanopoulos saying, “You can’t impeach someone for stuff that they did before they became president.”
First it is important to remember that Stephanopoulos was is a former United States Democratic Party political advisor. He also served as Communications Director for President Clinton’s 1992 U.S. Presidential Campaign, as the Clinton White House Communications Director and as President Clinton’s Senior Advisor for Policy and Strategy.
Also, I don’t think it’s the best usage of convicted to refer to a result of a civil matter. It is generally used in connection with criminal matters and impeachments. Perhaps I should overlook that because Stephanopoulos did leave the White House before President Clinton was impeached.
As to whether you could impeach a president for something that occurred the president took office is a political matter. The Supreme Court has determined that the federal judiciary cannot review Impeachment proceedings. Therefore, the question is entirely up to the Senate.
