Wisconsin lefties had barely come to grips with Hillary Clinton’s defeat when they were dealt yet another blow. Madison, Wisconsin radio station The Mic (92.1 WXXM-FM) was one of the best performing left wing talk stations in the country—that’s not saying much, I know— but the station has dumped the format for an alternative that adds insult to injury: Christmas music.
The Mic threw a big “Bah, Humbug” to liberals in Madison on Wednesday when the left-leaning all-talk radio station started pumping Christmas music into the air.
The sudden switch came as Democrats were still absorbing Donald Trump’s stunning presidential election victory just hours earlier, when many were hoping to find solace in like-minded hosts and guests.
Many probably think this is more evidence of Trump silencing dissent. One can’t help but think of when Dr. Johnny Fever growled “boooger” during WKRP in Cincinatti’s abrupt change to rock and roll from easy listening.
The Mic, also known as 92.1 WXXM-FM, is now being called 92.1 Best FM, and is broadcasting holiday music all day.
“We’re excited to spread cheer throughout the community with popular holiday music on WXXM,” Keith Bratel, market president for iHeartMedia Madison, said in a statement.
The new station hasn’t yet publicized what its format will be after the holidays. I’m guessing it’s not going to be atheism.
Wisconsin based Freedom From Religion Foundation’s atheist themed radio show “Freethought Radio” is one of the shows people will have to listen to elsewhere.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation’s radio show has been unceremoniously yanked off the air locally.
FFRF received belated notice this morning that the broadcast of its decade-long radio program, Freethought Radio, has been canceled by the Madison, Wis., radio station formerly known as “Progressive Talk” The Mic 92.1.
The news wasn’t a complete surprise, says Annie Laurie Gaylor, who hosts the lively program with her husband, Dan Barker. The couple are co-presidents of the Madison-based state/church watchdog and freethought advocacy group.
“We opened up the Wisconsin State Journal the morning after the election to read the remarkable announcement that progressive talk had been banished forthwith on 92.1 FM and replaced with around-the-clock Christmas music!” says Gaylor. “It’s not exactly the appropriate vehicle for Freethought Radio now.”
Not to worry, lefties, you’ll still be able to listen to your favorite Maoists online or in podcast form.
