Governor Rick Perry – Energy Secretary?

During the primaries for the 2012 election, Texas Governor Rick Perry entered the race with a lot of steam behind him, but hit the wall with his now-infamous “Oops” moment.

Sleep-deprived and in recovery from major back surgery, Governor Perry lost his train of thought in a very public way, and at the most inopportune moment – in the middle of a televised debate – as he tried to remember three departments that he would trim from the government, if president.

“It’s three agencies of government when I get there that are gone: commerce, education, and the uh … what’s the third one, there? Let’s see… The third one. I can’t,” he said, adding “Oops.”

I remember that moment. It was painful, but ultimately, shouldn’t have ended his candidacy, but apparently, the public was a lot less tolerant of gaffes four years ago.

The department he was trying to remember was the Department of Energy.

Call me a cynic, but in what looks to be a bit of trolling, President-elect Trump is reportedly considering Governor Perry for the position of Energy Secretary.

Of all the positions to put a man with Perry’s experience in, Energy Secretary is not one that I would consider, so this one is an oddity.

Perry was one of the earliest and harshest critics of Trump during the primary season, coining the phrase “Trumpism” and declaring Trump a cancer on conservatism.

He was right, of course, but I suppose that ship has sailed.

When his own campaign didn’t take off, Perry stepped aside, before eventually endorsing and then stumping hard for Senator Ted Cruz.

When Cruz bowed out, leaving Trump as nominee, Perry got on board and became a vocal proponent of Trump.

Alongside Perry, Bill Hagerty, who is the head of a private-equity investment firm and a former chief economic development officer for Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, is being considered for U.S. Trade Representative.

Steven Mnuchin and Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling are also being considered for the Treasury secretary.

There are a lot of interesting names being suggested for the new administration, and at this point, nobody should put full confidence in anything they hear. Trump has said that only he knows the “finalists,” as he has referred to them, which suggests that some names may be floated, just to keep the press guessing.

Let’s just take a wait-and-see approach.
