Leonard Cohen, Singer, Songwriter, Inspiration Dead at 82

Leonard Cohen, singer, songwriter, inspiration and national treasure has passed away at age 82.  Cohen maybe best known for his beautiful, haunted ballad, “Hallelujah”, however his illustrious career spanned 50 years.

Rolling Stone is still good at covering musicians and they did a lovely tribute to Cohen when they broke the news to their readers….

“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away,” the statement read. “We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.” A cause of death and exact date of death was not given.

My father passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles with the knowledge that he had completed what he felt was one of his greatest records,” Cohen’s son Adam wrote in a statement to Rolling Stone. “He was writing up until his last moments with his unique brand of humor.”

2016 has been hard on the creative community, however Cohen seemed almost prescient about his upcoming passing.  Mentioning in a column to The New Yorker just a few months ago, that his health was failing and so was he.

I am ready to die,” he said. “I hope it’s not too uncomfortable. That’s about it for me.

Cohen later shrugged off the comment, but as he worked on his last project “Make it Darker” to his dying day, it seems he wasn’t “exaggerating” after all.  The World will miss the man whose creations have inspired us for decades.

 
There are thousands of covers of his signature song, but none feel quite like the original.
