In just about 15 minutes, Donald Trump will speak to Congress and America, laying out his big plans for the country. The talking points came out yesterday afternoon, and as of a few hours ago, some media outlets were reporting that the speech was still being tweaked.
Here is the stream, courtesy NBC News.
Part of that, we can assume, has to deal with the big change in position when it comes to immigration and immigration reform that “leaked” out earlier today (you can find my take on that here). However, the major talking point for the last two days has been his plans for defense spending.
Here are the talking points we expect tonight. Granted that this is Donald Trump and scripts aren’t exactly his thing, this could totally change between now and halfway into his speech.
More Spending on Defense
So, the big item on Donald Trump’s spending plans is the increased defense spending. He has long been calling for making our military great again, and this could be his moment to make it happen. He’s got the numbers in Congress and he has the support of the hawkish wing of the party on this, so it could be coming. The question is where does the money come from?
Less Spending on Entitlements
Democrats are freaking out over the fact that Trump has called for reduced spending on entitlement programs (not defunding them completely, but reducing the spending there), and transferring that money into the defense budget. It is almost as though such a plan were tailored to maintain the support of fiscal conservatives wary of Trump’s liberal past.
AND Increased Economic Income
Trump also spoke in a recent interview about how he expects a rising economy to naturally provide more revenue to the government, which would in turn be directed to help supplement the defense spending increases. This is, of course, assuming Trump does not also call for tax increases. But, I suppose we shall see.
The plan to call for comprise in an immigration reform package was surprising, but given that the news came out today and that we’ve heard Trump’s team was still working on the speech this afternoon, we have to assume that this has made its way into the speech.
What are his plans for the Affordable Care Act? Congress appears to be fumbling on it, and it’s driving people crazy. Trump is now said to be working on his own plan, but will he give any details about it? We’ll see.
Check out the stream at the top, and consider this an open thread.
