A Quote From Trump’s ‘The Art of the Deal’ Perfectly Describes His Presidency

Donald Trump continues to be one of the most perplexing presidents we have ever seen before. Nothing he does, for the most part, is “by the book.”

A quote from his 1987 bestselling book, “The Art of the Deal,” offers a quote that perfectly encapsulates his strategy.

“What the bulldozers and dump trucks did wasn’t important, I said, so long as they did a lot of it.”

Trump’s quote was in reference to a stunt he pulled in 1982 that got him out of a jam. He owned a large piece of land alongside the Atlantic City boardwalk and was trying to convince Holiday Inn to partner with him on the construction of a new casino.

Trump’s lot was empty, and he knew that if he could create the illusion that construction was taking place on the lot, it would help him to persuade Holiday Inn to invest in the deal.

Just before the Holiday Inn executives were set to visit the site, Trump directed his construction manager to hire dozens of bulldozers and tractors to begin moving dirt around on the site, digging holes, and filling them back up all day.

This same strategy depicts much of how Trump strategizes today. Trump aims to create the illusion that he is doing much more than he actually is — there are pros and cons to this strategy.

He has used this strategy most recently with healthcare. He demands that Congress pass a healthcare bill regardless of what is actually in the bill itself. He has no regard to the particulars, just the action that shows he was able to get it done.

In government, it matters what the bulldozers and dump trucks are doing. There’s accountability it government.

Trump has accomplished some really good things so far, but he won’t be able to hide the results. He cannot push a healthcare bill without actually caring about the details; he cannot say Mexico will pay for the wall and then stick Americans with the bill.

He’s slowly learning that, and he will be unstoppable in 2020 if he works with Congress and passes conservative policies and agendas.

For what is it worth, it worked in 1982 and Holiday Inn agreed to partner with Trump on the construction of the Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino.
