Schumer. We Will Block New FBI Director Until We Get A Special Prosecutor

TAPPER: You just called for a special prosecutor to investigate this possible collusion between the Trump team and Russia, your party, however, has not settled on a strategy for how to make this happen. As you know, the Justice Department would have to appoint a special prosecutor. Senator Mark Warner, he’s the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, he wants the Democratic Party to refuse to vote on the nomination of a new FBI director until is appointed. Do you support that move?

SCHUMER: I think there are a lot of Democrats who feel that way. We’d have to discuss it as a caucus, but I would support that move.

This is certainly a strategy and it fits nicely into the Democrat worldview that slowing down the Senate will result in electoral victory in 2018. In the real world, I don’t see how this plays out well for the Democrats. To refuse to allow a confirmation hearing and vote on a new FBI director they need Mitch McConnell to go along. That isn’t a sure thing. Even if McConnell does go along, the worst case scenario is that Andrew McCabe continues to lead the FBI. That wouldn’t be my choice as I think McCabe is hopelessly compromised and should never have been appointed to the most senior career position in what is billed as a non-political organization, but that would be the default and it would be better than appointing a special prosecutor to attempt to find a crime rather than to investigate an actual crime.

In short, this is Democrat posturing it is not a negotiating position.
