WATCH: Conservatives Might Not Like Trump’s Plan for His Second Quarter Salary
President Trump continues to make good on his promise to donate his presidential salary to charity (or, presumably, an organization doing good works). His first quarter salary of $78,333 went to Antietam National Battlefield to restore a building and shore up some aging fencing on the property.
It was announced today that his second quarter salary, totaling $100,000, would be going to the Department of Education to host a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) camp for kids.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made the announcement today, and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was on hand to accept the ceremonial check.
The choice of the Department of Education is a curious one. Conservatives have long called for the abolishment of the department, which was created by President Carter as the ultimate kickback to the education unions that supported him in the 1976 presidential campaign. Trump himself has proposed slashing its budget by 14 percent, but clearly supports many of the department’s initiatives.
