Protest Outside White House Leads To Arrest Of U.S. Representative

Good. Lock him up.

Call this an idiotic publicity stunt, in order to play to his base.

Representative Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) joined protesters outside the White House on Tuesday, to commemorate the fifth anniversary of DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. He, along with 30 others, was arrested.

Doug Rivlin, a spokesman for Gutiérrez, said the congressman was taken by U.S. Park Police, who have jurisdiction over the area surrounding the White House. Those arrested Tuesday were taken to Park Police headquarters in Anacostia Park, Rivlin said.

The Park Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gutiérrez has been arrested outside the White House twice before, in 2010 and 2011, in similar protests. He was also arrested at a Chicago Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in March, where he was protesting deportations of DACA program recipients, commonly known as “Dreamers.”

How does a man who can’t keep his butt out of jail still have a job?

Politics.

Gutiérrez was arrested for sitting on the sidewalk in front of the White House. Before his arrest, he said he was there to protest the potential removal of benefits for those who fall under the umbrella of DACA.

“The same values that I inculcated in my daughters, that my wife and I raised them, [Dreamers] are an example and exemplify them. Their dreams are just like my kids’ dreams,” Gutiérrez told The Hill shortly before his arrest.

The Lafayette Square rally was commemorating DACA’s fifth anniversary and comes as the program faces a critical deadline. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) is leading a coalition of 10 states that have pledged to contest the program’s legality unless Trump rescinds it by Sept. 5.

The White House and the Justice Department have not said if they will defend the Obama-era program in court.

So far, there has been no signal from the administration that they intend to do anything to disrupt DACA, so 800,000 illegals remain unruffled.

The administration has suggested possibly ending Temporary Protected Status, which allows citizens from countries that had suffered from natural disasters or internal troubles, such as Haiti, to find temporary refugee status in the United States.

Saving TPS was another cause brought up at the event in Lafayette Park.

With everything we’re dealing with today, shouldn’t Gutiérrez have been on his job?

He should have, unless somebody can tell me he did this on his lunch break.
