The Egg People of Twitter Retweeted Trump Nearly Half a Billion Times in 2016

Some of us already knew this.

Those egg people, the Russian bots that seemed to come out of the woodwork during the election season really did seem to have a preference.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one:

Donald Trump.

As lawmakers have studied how Russian harnessed social media to influence the election and activities surrounding the election, Twitter has been cooperating by examining accounts and weeding out accounts that have proven to originate from Russian troll farms.

What they’ve found is a hard push to promote Trump over Clinton to the public.

The company revealed to lawmakers on Thursday that the Russian-linked accounts had retweeted Trump nearly 470,000 times from Sept. 1 to Nov. 5, 2016. The accounts retweeted Hillary Clinton less than 50,000 times during the same timeframe.

I don’t know what kind of Twitter presence Clinton has. It’s possible she gave the bots much less material to work with.

Trump, on the other hand, is on Twitter constantly, so there was so much more to retweet. It would be foolish, however, to think that there was no purpose behind the online activities of these bots.

Twitter announced last year that it had identified 200 accounts linked to Russian election interference.

Facebook and Google also submitted responses to the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday.

Facebook said that it had found 129 events created by pages linked to a Russian “troll farms” that spread information intended to influence the election.

Needless to say (but I’ll say it, anyway), these activities are not intended for our good.
