We are all new to gun ownership at some point, so there is nothing to be ashamed of in asking for tips, pointers and guidance when it comes to being a gun owner. These pointers could range from buying tips to storage hints. No question is stupid or wrong. These 5 handy tips or words of wisdom will get you started in the right direction when it comes to being new to gun ownership.

  1. Start Off Slowly

Once you have a license to carry or own a gun, your instinct may be to go out and purchase a few weapons to get started. However, it is better to shop around and do your research. Start off purchasing one or two guns for your collection. Read gun reviews to help you decide which to buy. Talk to gun shop owners about the weapons they carry and how they match up to your experience level with guns. All of this legwork will pay off when you have more knowledge about what you are purchasing.

2. Get a Gun Safe

This is usually mandated by local laws anyhow, but even if it isn’t, owning a gun safe for your collection is a very good idea. The type of safe you buy will depend on where you plan to house it and what type of guns you will be storing. Read reviews on some of the best gun safes and the styles they are available in. Having a gun safe will ensure your guns are stored safely and prevent accidents as well as theft.

3. Practice Makes Perfect

Owning a gun does not automatically make you a pro. You need to hone your skills with your weapon and that means using it. Sign up for lessons, workshops or classes. Get out to the shooting range and practice firing your weapon. This is especially important if you are purchasing a gun solely for protection and self-defense should the need arise. If you don’t have a clue how to properly aim and fire the gun, you won’t be protected and you may even cause an accident while using it.

4. Purchase a Proper Holster

You cannot safely or properly carry your gun in a regular pants belt. Just as you shopped around for the right gun, you should do the same for a holster. It should fit your body properly and feel comfortable. The holster you choose should be appropriate for the type of gun you are carrying and sit in the right position on your body.

5. Read the Manual

Most people will skip over any manual that comes with a new gadget, toy, vehicle etc. However, this manual should not be tossed aside unread. Every gun, when purchased brand new, comes with an owners manual. Read it. Read it twice. Learn about your gun and how to disassemble it, clean it, load it and more. If you purchased a used gun, use the power of the Internet to find an online version. This is one manual that should not be skipped whether a new gun owner or seasoned expert.

When you decide to become a gun owner, you take on a certain level of responsibility and accountability. It is important to take the right steps in being a good gun owner verses one who is lazy and lacks the knowledge or training to use their weapon safely and properly. Following the tips outlined here will get you started on a positive path to becoming a seasoned gun owner and building your collection of weaponry safely and with knowledge.

There is no substitute for professional training. The benefits will last a lifetime, and could be much more important than a second, third, forth or fith gun.
Perfect practice makes perfect. (see professional training.)
Properly dry firing your gun will improve your accuracy more than a trip to the range. (see professional training.)
Go to the range to confirm you are improving through dry firing. (You must do it properly to be safe, and improve accuracy.)
You need a gun belt to hold your holster. A heavy belt that does not flex and collapse under the weight of a hoster is important.
Realize a gun isn’t a magic tailisman. It cannot protect you if you do not develope and maintain your level of skill.
