Guns Are Not the Disease, but They Are a Tool in the Hands of the Afflicted

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I’m in a very tough position right now. Just last night, several kids I’ve gotten to know through various school events or activities graduated. They walked across the stage and into their futures. Next week, I say goodbye to the kids I teach and end my school year.

On the same day that our kids graduated, many lost their lives at a school in Texas.

These tragedies have happened all too often, and they are becoming more and more high profile, given the media attention that is given to every one of them and the speed with which a school shooting becomes a political debate. We are far more engaged in debating one another than in fixing problems.

It’s true. We are far too invested in the fight to let there be a solution. The fight over guns is one we get to keep having. There is a Constitutional right versus a scary weapon of war. It’s a beautiful showdown, one for the ages, that we can’t get enough of. The moment a shooting happens, we race to our social media profiles with talking points and links and memes at the ready, hoping to completely own the opposition.

But, here’s the reality. There is a good chance many of you reading this aren’t going to walk into a school on Monday and be asked by students about this. You might be asked by your children, but it’s different when you walk into a classroom and you have students worried about their safety.

The chances of a shooting occurring at my school or your kids’ school are still slim, but the odds seem to be increasing. Children are scared. Families do get worried. Parents worry for their children’s safety.

Yesterday in Texas, a handgun and a shotgun were involved. Nothing controversial about those. They are rarely discussed in gun control debates. The shooter, a kid who wore a trench coat, wore medals that included an iron cross and a hammer and sickle. His personal writings and social media indicated suicidal intent, although he admitted to the authorities he didn’t have the courage to follow through.

In Florida, the Parkland shooter was a troubled kid who was completely ignored by the system to the point of neglect. Going all the way back to Columbine, the trend isn’t one of gun availability, but of kids who weren’t given the help they needed when they needed it most. These are children who were ignored by parents/guardians, school systems, and in some cases law enforcement.

The bottom line is this: This is not the time for thoughts and prayers, nor is it the time to sound the call for seizing guns. Right now, we should be focused on what we’re missing in our kids.

There are loads of reasons that kids end up on the wrong side of the law or of their own sanity. None of those get brought up in our debates, but they should be the central focus. What can we do besides blame each other? How can we be more invested in our children’s lives and their future?

That’s where this discussion – not the debate, but the discussion – needs to head next. We need to focus on the children, and what’s causing them to bring weapons to school and murder their classmates. It’s not as though they wouldn’t find some other way. Guns make it easier, but they aren’t the disease. They’re not even really a symptom.

Maybe we have this fear of othering the mentally unwell. Maybe we just aren’t comfortable admitting that there is a deeper issue that can’t be solved with a simple “Seize the weapon!” debate. Whatever it is, we choose to ignore the real disease at our peril.

So far we have not had a single real investigation in any of these school shootings so do not expect the public to believe the “official” story
any more than we believe the obvious lies of 911.

So are lies a “tool of the afflicted”. I believe the school shooting official stories about as much as I believe the 911 official story.

Guns have nothing to do with the murders, other than a mechanism to facilitate
some sick person’s need to murder others. Could have knifed them to death like
happens in China all too often, or, used a machete. The real causes that no one
seems to address is “where were the parents in all of this?”.. How was this obviously
derange kid raised? Let’s quit with the finger pointing at guns, and put the blame
where it really lies, the parents who raised a monster! How did they create this
monster?? Therein lies the real question.

At least some intelligent people have brought forth the other discussion on the
possible cause of this. Video games subject their players to hours upon hours,
of mindless killing without and consequences for the person(s) playing games
of murder and mayhem. Where are the parents? Do you really condone your
child sitting down blowing people away all day and night long in your house?
Isn’t there something more constructive they could be doing? How about guitar
lessons or drum lessons? No! Can’t have their children learning a real skill that
makes others happy, instead I will let my brat child sit for hours every night
and blow people away without any consequences whatsoever.. I think it would
be great if video games shot back pointed darts that hurt like hell when played.
Video games do not shoot back though, and these kids can murder others at
will anytime they choose, and get “numb” to killing because of it. Then we
wonder how they can get weapons and go kill others so easily? It only makes
sense that it is because our horrible parenting allows them to be “conditioned”
into it with their blessing (apparently). So is it really so surprising that
      Santa Fe and Parkland happen?

I think the real answer is that people need to take a long hard look at how
they are allowing their children to get away with murder all of the time, and
perhaps give them something better to do with their time. Be a real parent
and don’t always let them have the latest “trending” games etc. Instead,
take them out bowling, or go to a movie, or enroll them in some kind of
lessons to learn a skill other than mindless killing sprees via video games.
Teach your children how to do things that help those around them instead.
JJ Watt just told all of the victims families that he would pay for the funerals
for them. JJ Watt was raised by a great parent that taught him to be his best
at all he did, and to help others around him. Not only did he raise tens of millions
of dollars to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey, but now he has stepped up
to pay for funerals of victims of a bad parenting caused tragedy. What a guy huh?
Why not raise a JJ Watt, instead of the kid that shot up his classmates?
Ironically the only difference between the two people is how they were raised.
Both were football players, and yes one was much larger, but the main
difference was parenting. Even small guys parented correctly can be great.
Jose Altuve was the MVP in the American League of baseball last year.
He is just a short guy, and he got it done. So point here being, you don’t
have to be huge like J.J. Watt, you can be normal sized. What you do
need is great parents though, who know enough to not let their kids sit
and practice murdering others all day and night in front of a screen.

Are people too afraid to tell their kids “NO”? Is that what it is? Are
they afraid they would not be “cool” then to their kids? Is that what is
going on? I am sure some of that is going on, and it’s time to put on
the pants in your family and be a real parent, one that has rules to
follow. One with morals to follow, and one who is a great example
to their children. It takes courage and it takes a lot of work to be
a good parent. You brought them into the world, don’t drop the ball
now, get after it. BE a PARENT, talk to your kids, get inside of their
heads. Listen to what they want to tell you, but all the time steer
them into greatness. Don’t let them run you, YOU run the show.
