Gowdy and Nunes Say Time Has Run Out on Rod Rosenstein’s Obstruction of Congressional Investigations

South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy was a guest on Fox News Sunday earlier and he unloaded on the FBI based on the the DOJ IG report. The real news, in my view, was on the subject of outstanding subpoenas and document requests. Watch the whole thing bedause there is some funny stuff in it about Comey’s credibility and Adam Schiff’s pathological leaking but this is the key part.

On Fox, @TGowdySC says Ryan/Nunes/Goodlatte/Gowdy met with FBI/DOJ Friday night, vowed House action this week against FBI/DOJ unless FBI/DOJ complies with subpoenas. Via @playbookplus

Also on Fox was Devin Nunes:

The path Nunes laid out was stark. He expects document production to start tomorrow. He expects either the remaining documents be delivered shortly thereafter, or, failing that a schedule of delivery that has been agreed to by House leadership. If that does not happen, then Wednesday the issue will be brought to the House floor.

Devin Nunes on Rod Rosenstein:

“We can’t force the resignation, but we can hold in contempt, we can pass resolutions, we can impeach. I think we’re getting close to there,” says “there will be hell to pay” if he doesn’t hand over documents this week on the FISA scandal

This is unprecedented. The Speaker of the House and three of the most powerful committee chairmen have been forced to threaten the deputy attorney general with a criminal contempt citation in order to get documents he’s legally obligated to furnish them.

While it is tempting to ding both President Trump and Attorny General Jeff Sessions for a lack of leadership. But, thanks to the special counsel nonsense, neither Trump nor Sessions have the ability to direct Rosenstein to comply…and they don’t have the ability to side with Rosenstein, should insanity strike and they want to, because Trump needs the House on his side.

It is really difficult to see how Rosenstein survives much more than another two or three months. And, if as expected, there are major revelations in the subpoenaed documents about the genesis of the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign, it is difficult it imagine he survives at all.

Nunes on Fox: Mr. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, and Director Wray have to decide whether or not they want to be part of the clean-up crew or they want to be part of the cover-up crew. That’s really the decision that they have to make for themselves here.
