Sandra Martinez, RN, Represents New York with Entry into Renowned Publication Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare

Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare and the International Nurses Association are proud to announce that Sandra A. Martinez, RN, MSN is being honored for her exceptional successes in the nursing community.  With many years in nursing, with emphasis on transfusion medicine and cellular therapies, Sandra has demonstrated the passion, dedication, and enthusiasm for quality patient care necessary to be considered a Top Nurse in her field.

Sandra is a Clinical Nurse Supervisor with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System in Manhasset, New York. Considered one of the largest health systems in the nation, North Shore-LIJ provides world-class clinical care throughout the New York metropolitan area. Sandra joined North Shore-LIJ in 2011 working as the nursing supervisor of the Therapeutic Apheresis department. In her role as a Clinical Nurse Supervisor, Sandra oversees the care, coordination and scheduling of her patient’s procedures. This dynamic unit collects patient’s stem cells for their transplants, performs Red Cell Exchanges, Leukodepletion, and apheresis procedures on auto immune compromised patients. Recently, her team validated and implemented the use of the Therakos Cellex Photopheresis technology, this technology is the only one currently located in Nassau County, New York.

Prior to her current endeavors, she performed as an Apheresis Manager at the New York Blood Center, where she served for 38 years. Sandra was involved in the production of both platelets and packed red blood cells in 6 fixed sites at Long Island Blood Services a division of the New York Blood Center. Sandra was instrumental in the validations and upgrades of these technologies throughout her employment at this facility. In order to produce these products she was responsible for the training of new apheresis phlebotomist who produced these life saving platelets on 59 Fenwal Amicus machines, and the production of double red cell units on 41 Fenwal ALYX machines.

Sandra first attended St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Yonkers, followed by Nassau Community College where she obtained her AAS in Nursing. She worked at Loeb Center in Montefiore Hospital located in The Bronx, which was the premiere hospital where Lydia Hall, the leading nursing theorist, initiated Primary Care Nursing.  She attended New York Institute of Technology at Old Westbury to study sociology and psychology where she was inducted into Psi Chi, the International Honor Society for Psychology. In 2002, she acquired her Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration and Informatics from Molloy College, and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, which is the International Honor Society of Nursing. To stay active in the field, she published abstracts in the Transfusion Medicine Journal and presented at AABB, American Association of Blood Banks. This association represents individuals and institutions involved in the field of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies from around the globe. AABB is committed to improving health by developing and delivering standards, accreditation and educational programs that focus on optimizing patient care and donor care and safety.
