Ezekiel's Temple Will Never be Built - Mike Clinton

EZEKIEL’S TEMPLE WILL NEVER BE BUILT

EZEKIEL’S TEMPLE IS NOT A FUTURE TEMPLE

Ezekiel’s Temple is not a future temple. It was a temple that should have been built by the Jews when they returned from the Babylonian captivity. This article gives the reasons for this conclusion.

CHRONOLOGICAL CONFUSION

Ezekiel describes a temple that will have: animal sacrifices, mandatory circumcision: 44:9, separation between Jews and Gentiles: 43:10&11, a return to owning slaves: 46:17, a Temple only for the Jews: 43:10&11.

Because this vision of the Temple (40-48) follows the vision of the final regathering of the Jews and the battle of Gog and Magog (36-39) it has led many to believe it is in the future; but Ezekiel 40 does not follow 36-39 chronologically. This has led to confusion about the Temple being in the future. There is a 13 year gap between ch. 39 and ch. 40, see 32:1

ANIMAL SACRIFICES HAVE BEEN PUT AWAY FOREVER

The idea that there will be a future temple with animal sacrifices is flatly contradicted by everything written in the Epistles. (The Law was still in effect in the Gospels and Acts is a transitional book.)

One of the first books of the Bible that really interested me as a young Christian was the Book of Hebrews. I have read it in excess of a hundred times and studied it through in Greek, looking up every word in its occurrence in the New Testament. The book of Hebrews is a warning to Jews who had suffered persecution because they had become Christians. They were thinking about returning to the Temple and Judaism to escape persecution. The writer of Hebrews warns them that by doing this they would be rejecting Christ’s once for all sacrifice. He tells them that the animal sacrifices have been put away forever and that Christ’s sacrifice was the only sacrifice available to put away sins. Animal sacrifices were no longer valid and the old system would soon vanish away. The Temple would soon be destroyed and the customs of Moses changed.

Here is just one example from Hebrews: 10: 6-14 “In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you have had no pleasure. Then said I, See, I come in the volume of the book it is written of me, to do your will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin you would not, neither had pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, See, I come to do your will, O God. He takes away the first, that he may establish the second. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From now on expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he has perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”

MEMORIAL SACRIFICES???

The explanation for this problem is that the sacrifices are only “memorial” sacrifices. Yet Ezekiel plainly says they are sacrifices for guilt and sin: e.g., 43: 19-26 and 45: 17,22.

THERE IS NO MENTION OF EZEKIEL’S TEMPLE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

“Hebrews 8:8,9: ‘Behold, the days come when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.’ That new covenant has not yet been made with the nation of Israel, but only with the true Israel of God. Nor can it be made with the Jews until they say ‘Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.’ But when that covenant is made, it will be ‘not according to the covenant ratified with animal sacrifices and associated with tabernacle service that I made with your fathers….’ But what Ezekiel describes is a re-institution of those very things. Therefore his code is not for Israel in the day when at last they receive the blessings of the New Covenant in Christ. “

EZEKIEL’S TEMPLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BUILT BY THE RETURNING JEWS

THE KEY TO THE VISION

The key to this vision of the Temple is found in these verses:

Eze. 43:9-11 Now let them put away their whoredom, and the carcases of their kings, far from me, and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever. Thou son of man, shew the house to the house of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their iniquities: and let them measure the pattern. And if they be ashamed of all that they have done, shew them the form of the house, and the fashion thereof, and the goings out thereof, and the comings in thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the ordinances thereof, and all the forms thereof, and all the laws thereof: and write it in their sight, that they may keep the whole form thereof, and all the ordinances thereof, and do them.

These verses tell us that if the Jews thoroughly repented and were ashamed of all their sins; this temple could be realized when they returned from the Babylonian captivity. Ezekiel and the captive Jews were not interested in some distant Temple far in the future. They wanted to know what kind of Temple awaited their return. The destruction of Jerusalem and the first Temple is the context of the vision. 40:1 . What about Jerusalem? What about the temple? Will they be rebuilt?

THE JEWS ENDEAVORED TO FOLLOW EZEKIEL’S INSTRUCTIONS WHEN THEY RETURNED FRON BABYLON

Rabbi Sholoma Yitzchaki

“The second ascent to the Holy Land of Israel during the time of Ezra was meant to be like the first entry through Joshua—to come about by force and through a miracle. This is what the Talmud states, bringing proof from the verse where it states twice [the words] “cross over,” “Your people cross over, O G-d, until this nation that You have acquired crosses over.”

This building would have been fit for them then, when they emerged from exile, had there been an everlasting redemption. However, their sin caused this not to happen for their repentance was not suitable. In other words, they did not resolve to stop sinning. Therefore, they were freed only through the sanction of Cyrus and his son. Some say that their sin in Babylon was that they stumbled regarding gentile women.”

Rabbi Yehuda Shurpin

“Indeed, when the Rabbis referred to the second Temple period, they would say it was a partial redemption only. For not only were the Jews still under foreign rule, but the second Temple also lacked some key components—including the Holy Ark. However, even though the second Temple did not have the everlasting quality of the Temple of Ezekiel’s prophecy, the builders did incorporate certain parts of the prophecy into its construction.”

Eichhorn

“The temple described by Ezekiel should have been built by the new colonists; the customs and usages which he orders should have been observed by them; the division of the country should have been followed by them. That the temple did not arise out of its ruins according to his model, and that his orders were in no manner obeyed, was the fault of Israel. How far were they behind the orders of their first lawgiver, Moses? What wonder, therefore, that they as little regarded their second lawgiver, Ezekiel?”

WHO IS THE PRINCE?

There is a Prince mentioned in the Temple vision that some say is Jesus or a resurrected David, but, he has a wife and family: 46:16,17, he is subject to death : 46:17,18, he must be warned against oppression: 45:8; 46:18, goes no further than the court of the priests: 46:2, offers sacrifice for sin: 45:22; 46:10-12.

More likely, this Prince would have been a man like Zerubbabel if they had repented and followed Ezekiel’s instructions.

EZEKIEL – THE SECOND LAWGIVER

“Israel, back from Babylon, needed a new code. They had no ark, no mercy seat therefore no Day of Atonement, no holy fire therefore no sacrifice. Lam. 2:6-9.The urim and thummim used by the priests could not be found. This is a new revelation for them emphasized by 40:4; 44:5; 43:10,11. In Ezekiel’s twenty-fifth year in Babylon 13 years after his previous prophecies about the valley of dry bones, he received a final vision. He saw a new Jerusalem and a new temple. Bear in mind, Ezekiel received this vision before the second temple was built in Jerusalem. His visions began with the destruction of the first temple; it is fitting that his visions end with the construction of the second temple.”

BACK FROM BABYLON THEY FOLLOWED EZEKIEL VERY LARGELY

The hints in Ezra and Nehemiah which connect their new temple with that described by Ezekiel are interesting and instructive.”

DIMENSIONS OF THE TEMPLE IN CYRUS DECREE IS IDENTICAL TO EZEKIEL’S

” In Ezra 6:3 the details of the decree of Cyrus include the actual dimensions as given by Ezekiel — central sanctuary 60 cubits long and 60 cubits high. These are the identical measurements which are to be deduced from Eze. 41:2,4.”

SECOND TEMPLE ACCORDING TO THE COMMAND OF GOD AND CYRUS

“Further, Ezra records that when the temple was finished, “they builded and finished it according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, etc.” 6:14. What command of God is referred to here? There is none to which reference can be made except Ezekiel 40-48.”

NO PRIVATE DWELLINGS IN JERUSALEM ACCORDING TO EZEKIEL’S PLAN

“It is useful also to recall that Ezekiel’s scheme required that Jerusalem be developed as a sanctuary area one mile square — approximately the size of the ancient city. There was to be no rebuilding of the business or residential area of the city, but instead Ezekiel planned another city called Jehovah-Shammah south of Jerusalem.”

“Apparently at this time other cities were being or had already been built, but not so the civilian part of Jerusalem Neh. 11: 20. This is a very extraordinary and significant fact. Similarly, as Ezekiel had planned for the Levitical ministers to have cities to dwell in the immediate vicinity of Jerusalem Eze. 45:5 Septuagint, so under Nehemiah ‘the singers builded themselves villages round about Jerusalem’ Neh. 12:29. Yet ‘the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded’ 7:4.”

“Indeed, the few who were now dwelling in the city did so ‘that in the night they may be a guard unto us, and may labor in the day’ 4:22.”

HAGGAI, ZECHARIAH, AND MALACHI RECORD THE FAILURE OF JEWS

“But the people of Israel were unable to carry the project through to its culmination. Their own efforts were halfhearted.”

When the Jews returned from their exile in Babylon, and they began to build a new temple, we see that, though initially excited to rebuild Jerusalem, had actually become worse by the time of their return from the exile. Ezra 9.6 They were more interested in their own houses than the Temple. God sent at least three prophets Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi to them, to warn them to repent, turn back to the Covenant, and build the Temple.

“They broke the Sabbath. Nehemiah 13.15-18 They married pagans. Nehemiah 13.23-27″

THE PROMISED LAND WAS DESCRIBED BUT THEY FAILED TO POSSESS IT TOO

Some say that God would not spend so much detail on a Temple that would never be built, but a large part of the book of Joshua has many details about the Promised land that was never fully realized either.

“After Moses died, God told Joshua that he would be leading the Children of Israel across the Jordan River into the “Promised Land.” God reminded Joshua where the geographic boundaries were. For a detailed description of the boundaries, from landmark to landmark, read Numbers 34:2-18. The Promised Land would encompass over 300,000 square miles.”

THEY TOO BEGAN, BUT DID NOT COMPLETE

The “Promised Land” never fully became the “Possessed Land.”

The most that the Israelites ever possessed was about 10%., a mere 30,000 square miles.

As Christians, every promise in the Bible is given to us to possess, but do we possess every promise in the Bible? How many of God’s promises have we made our own by conquest? They are given to us but we must take possession of them and make them our own.

Unfortunately, the Church, like Israel, has failed to claim the possessions given by the Lord.

EZEKIEL’S VISION WILL BE REALIZED IN THE NEW JERUSALEM

God’s plans never fail. What Ezekiel envisioned will one day be realized in the New Jerusalem where you will find many similarities with Ezekiel’s Temple vision.

Eze. 40:2 In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south.

Rev. 21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

But, the New Jerusalem will be for all nations, not just the Jews; the gates will never be shut, there will be no Temple, no slaves, and no animal sacrifices.

Note: Some parts of Ezekiel’s vision were not to be taken literally but figurative, e.g. the river from the Temple. 47:1-12

      Mike,

      You said:

“Animal sacrifices were no longer valid and the old system would soon vanish away.”

The key word from Hebrews is the law of Moses would SOON vanish. It will not vanish until this earth and heaven are done away with:

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

      —Matthew 5:17-18

      You said:

“THERE IS NO MENTION OF EZEKIEL’S TEMPLE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT”

There is a linkage to it though:

“And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.”

      —Ezekiel 47:12

1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

      —Revelation 22:1-2

      You said:

“Note: Some parts of Ezekiel’s vision were not to be taken literally but figurative, e.g. the river from the Temple. 47:1-12”

By specifically mentioning fruit that bears every month and leaves that are used for healing of the nations, the river of water of life mentioned in chapter 47 of Ezekiel is clearly tied in with Revelation 22:1-2. Or is the river of the water of life in Revelation figurative as well and not literal? Certainly it is literal.

Hello my friend am123. I can’t spend a whole lot of time on here today. I have many hours in this article already a customers who are getting anxious. I covered the connection with the New Jerusalem in the article.

The Temple was still standing when the Book of Hebrews was written, but, it and all that pertained to it vanished in 70 AD.

        • am123

          Hi Mike,

The temple may have vanished in 70 AD, but as per the words of Jesus, the law will not be done away with while we still have this present earth and heaven.

Additionally, do you believe the temple will be rebuilt at some point? If so, certainly there will be animal sacrifices there.

    • am123

For a completely different perspective on Ezekiel’s temple, see:

“Ezekiel’s Temple: A Christian Perspective on Animal Sacrifices in Eternity”

am123 I will read your article later. Thanks for giving me the link; now I don’t have to look it up.

    • Illumined777

Name it whatever you like…….ANOTHER temple will be built in the coming days.

      Revelation 11:1-2
11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. 2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months.

The current peace treaty in Israel that is due for completion in May 2014……..may allow for construction of said temple.

      • Mike Clinton

Illumined777 Okay, I name it the False Temple, the Tribulation Temple, the Temple for the Antichrist; it is not a Millennial temple at all.

        • Illumined777

Ok, I can agree with you there. I like those names you provided for it.

    • JustAComment

Good article. The temple in Ezekiel, et al, can be a “tough nut to crack,” was once very perplexing to me. But differences between the Ezekiel temple and Revelation house of the Lord, like size, number of gates, gates not locked in Revelation, etc, and Revelation 21:22 stating, in fact, there is no temple but for the Lord therein: such things support a thesis like yours. I’d also agree animal sacrifice would be so contrary to the New Testament gospel, as you mention Ezekiel 40+ can be clearly read as a manifesto of what a proper temple and worship would have been, does state all those details will be: God commanded many things in the framework of law which have been ignored, disobeyed. There’s also a case Ezekiel actually ends at chapter 39, 40+ written a few years earlier, the conclusion this temple follows Ezekiel 39, chronologically, not necessarily true, that is, just for chapter placements in the Bible.

      • Mike Clinton

JustAComment Thanks, you bring up some interesting points.

        • JustAComment

You’re welcome. I mistyped something, “does state all those details will be,” meant to type, “does NOT state all those details will be.” That is, regarding the many instructions, there’s no indication it’s future prophecy in the first place.

Something that’s always struck me, also.

Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

How could you have sacrificing, even the death of animals, but be able to say “the former things are passed away?” If anything, going back to the law would be very deep into the former things! When God states He’s not interested in animal sacrifices, has no pleasure in this (Hebrews 10:6)? Interesting that, in keeping, there’s absolutely no explicit indication in NT doctrine that there will be a reversion to animal sacrifice in the kingdom of heaven, rather the opposite, that Jesus Christ and His sacrifice fulfilled the law, nothing efficacious in animal sacrifice, no other sacrifice for sin. And you’d think there would be some prophecy of such an important detail, were it in God’s plan to shift gears and mix it up in His kingdom, some explanation how an animal sacrifice would fit Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, being the fulfillment of all. It’s on this single and grotesque contradiction to the most basic tenants of the Christian faith versus law that makes a return to animal sacrifice, after the tribulation when Christ rules, even an absurdity.

          Isaiah 1

11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?

But, in the future, His courts will be tread thus? Don’t think so…

          John 4

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

        • JustAComment

(As everybody studied knows, the Old Testament is also about Jesus Christ, the animal sacrifices a foreshadowing of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, once and for all. The final sacrifice.)

    • am123

      Another thing Mike. You said:

“Ezekiel’s Temple is not a future temple. It was a temple that should have been built by the Jews when they returned from the Babylonian captivity.”

This would have violated what Jesus said about the law of Moses. Jesus of course said the law will not be done away with as long as this earth and heavens remain (see Matthew 5:18). You yourself said the law was still in effect at the time of the Gospels. When the Jews returned from Babylonian captivity, the law of Moses was still in effect.

The rules and regulations according to Ezekiel’s temple are very much different than the law of Moses.

      Some sacrifice differences:

      * The Daily sacrifice for the Law of Moses is 2 lambs; For Ezekiel’s temple, the Daily sacrifice is 1 lamb.

      * The Sabbath offering for the Law of Moses is 2 lambs; for Ezekiel’s temple, the Sabbath offering is 6 lambs and 1 ram.

      * The New Moon offering for the Law of Moses is 2 bulls, 1 ram, and 7 lambs; for Ezekiel’s temple, it is 1 bull, 1 ram, and 6 lambs.

Also, the temple equipment and designs are completely different. In Ezekiel’s temple, there is no Table of Showbread, no Golden Lampstand, no Altar of incense, no veil, and no Ark of the Covenant. The sacrificial Altar will be approached by a ramp from the east. Previously, all altars were approached from the south.

The Law of Moses will have fulfilled its purpose and will be done away with once God creates a new heaven and new earth. Then, Ezekiel’s temple, with its unique rules and regulations and perpetual ordinances, will be the forever temple of God.

      • Mike Clinton

am123 Matthew 5:20 follows 5:18 “For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.”

        • am123

I don’t see how that is related to my point about the law of Moses being in effect therefore Ezekiel’s temple cannot come into play while the law of Moses is in effect.

        • Monnkz

“THERE IS NO MENTION OF EZEKIEL’S TEMPLE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT” Really??

          Revelation 11:1
And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. This has been fulfilled by the way. Just ask the king of Jordan, they own the temple mount. BUT THE OUTER COURT LEAVE OUT! why? The Muslim mosque sits exactly on that dimension. The temple will be built around the mosque.

Come on Mike! I don’t think you researched this topic thoroughly, this is only one verse that debunks your theory. Theres’ plenty more. Ezekiel’s temple is a prophecy and prophecy never fails.

        • Mike Clinton

Monnkz You are referring to the Tribulation Temple, not Ezekiel’s temple. I am doing an article about the false, Tribulation temple for the Antichrist. Watch for it.

    • Pharisees.org

Mike Clinton, a child of Hell. Christ confirmed the Temple as his house of prayer and while saying so, the Temple services were ongoing, including animal sacrifices.

Christ says there will be a third Temple (Matthew 24:15, Daniel 11:31), and that the Gentiles will trod the Holy City, but the Temple and is worshipers inside are measured, the dogs are without (Rev 11:1-2).

THE BEAST AND PAUL BOTH MOCK GOD’S TABERNACLE AND THE SERVANTS OF GOD’S TABERNACLE (Temple of God in Jerusalem, another to be)

Revelation 13:6 … the Beast opened his mouth to blaspheme the Tabernacle of God ….

Hebrews 13:10 Gentiles have an altar that those who serve the Tabernacle have no right to eat at

Clinton and other BIN contributors who are aware of my expose on Paul, but they continue to believe on Paul’s gospel, are fearless morons, children of Hell and they tell lies, blasphemies and hypocritical teachings because they are second hand remouthers of the lies and blasphemies and hypocrisy that is Pharisee Paul’s gospel.

      • am123

        You said:

“Clinton and other BIN contributors who are aware of my expose on Paul, but they continue to believe on Paul’s gospel”

Now that is funny. Like your commentaries have any validity that we should follow them?

You interpret the Apostle Paul’s teachings from a fleshly perspective, without an inkling of the spiritual matters Paul speaks about, and you come to your own fleshly, worldly conclusions and think that your juvenile arguments are proof that Paul was a false Apostle. You are the epitome of pride, arrogance, and foolishness.

Here you are commenting in an article which has nothing to do with Paul’s teachings, yet in your one track mind, it’s all about Paul’s teachings.

Your fruit is a bitter fruit. You are deserving of pity because you are so lost that you don’t know right from wrong. My advice to you is to seek Jesus while He may be found.

    • Monnkz

Shalom Mike, there is no such thing as a tribulation temple although I understand what you’re saying, this last temple is Ezekiel’s prophesied temple. There is no other. The measurements of this temple is the only one that makes provision for the Muslim mosque, that is the key, for years the Jews have tried to decipher these measurements but couldn’t because the mosque wasn’t built yet hence the confusion.

Make no mistake, the Messiah WILL NOT reside in that temple, the sole purpose of the temple is to reveal the abomination that makes desolate, without the temple, that prophecy cannot be fulfilled.

    • Wretched Infidel

      Thank you Mike Clinton!

    • Fanortnerod

The Lord’s physical temple is the earth for which He died. Preceding temples made by hands of men were ante-types. Scripture is quite clear on this, especially Revelation 11:19 and Malachi 3:1

The Ark of the Covenant/His Testament is in a chamber beneath His crucifixion site in the Jerusalem prison yard which has been identified

The fact that many are considering building another temple and resuming blood sacrifices is more that disturbing

    • Joel Enoch

If Ezekiel 43:2 identifies as Christ was speaking…
Then, in Eze 43:7 he said he is going to be with them forever…
He said: “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place for the soles of my feet. This is where I will live among the Israelites FOREVER…

The Christ’s temple and the New Jerusalem, which will come down from heaven after 1000 years reign of Christ, will DWELL on earth eternally….so according to scriptures 2 future eternal temples … and temporary one is going to be there on Earth.

I will try to give scripture in this regard…..

For Bible prophecy to be fulfilled, a new physical Temple MUST be built in Jerusalem by the end times. Many Christians point out that Christ was the ultimate sacrifice for sins and that animal sacrifices are no longer necessary. They neglect to see that this is the Christian view, but not necessarily the view of Jews. Christianity has long hoped for the conversion of the Jews to Christianity – I suggest this is more likely after Jews have a new Temple, complete with animal sacrifices, which should be repulsive to the population and make them question how they worship, and think about what God really wants – dead animals, or the submission of our base desires to a higher set of values?

I believe the Temple is coming soon, that the Antichrist will enter it, that all prophecy will be fulfilled soon.

Whether it will be rebuilt or not I don’t know but I do believe that the one in Ezekiel is symbolic just as an actual temple would be symbolic of something. That something is Jesus crucified. The gates form a cross with the temple as the head of the cross. The reason the head is toward the west is so that the arms of the cross form a bridge from south to north. This bridge represents a bridge from earth(south) to heaven(north). The river and the blood of the sacrifices represent the water and blood that came from Jesus side during his crucifixion. The old testament is the shadow or allegory for the reality which is Jesus. The altar is the burning heart of Jesus. It forms the light that represents the light of the world that flows through the gates which represents Jesus. The cross of light created by the altar going through the gates and into the temple represents Jesus himself on the cross which is the temple.
