Britain raises terror threat level

Britain has raised the terror threat level from substantial to severe, but says there is no specific threat.

The threat level means that a terrorist attack is considered “highly likely,” but there is no information to suggest an attack is imminent. The higher threat level is related to developments in Iraq and Syria.

PRO-RUSSIA SEPARATISTS IN CONTROL OF COASTAL TOWN

Pro-Russia separatists, relaxed and well-equipped, holds a firm control of the strategic coastal town of Novoazovsk, a day after Ukraine claimed tanks and armored vehicles had invaded from Russia.

Reporters saw at least a half-dozen tanks. None of the tanks bore Russian markings, but ready-made meals seen near one of the tanks carried markings that they were issued by the Russian army.

Volcanoes In Iceland, Papua New Guinea, Keep Residents On Edge

Two volcanoes half a world apart are causing havoc today: Several flights have been diverted around an eruption in Papua New Guinea, and authorities in Iceland briefly put aviation on highest alert due to a temperamental Mt. Bardarbunga, which has been rumbling for the past week.

Mt. Tarvurvur in New Guinea erupted, sending smoke and ash skyward. There have been no reports of injuries.

Libyan interim government submits resignation

Libya’s interim government submitted its resignation to the newly elected parliament, raising the possibility that a more inclusive government will be formed, while militias in the capital accepted a U.N. call for a cease-fire.

Meanwhile, Islamist militias in eastern Libya claimed to have shot down a fighter jet over Bayda. It said the aircraft was under the command of renegade General Khalifa Hifter, who for months has been fighting Islamist militias in the country’s east.

UN SAYS SYRIA REFUGEES TOP 3 MILLION MARK

The civil war in Syria has forced 3 million people out of the country as more than a million people fled in the past year, creating a crisis that the U.N. refugee agency said requires the biggest operation in its 64-year history.

The tragic milestone means that about one of every eight Syrians has fled across the border, and 6.5 million others have been displaced. More than half of all those uprooted are children.

MEXICO OPERATIONS THWART CHILD, FAMILY MIGRANTS

Mexico’s largest crackdown in decades on illegal migration has decreased the flow of Central Americans trying to reach the United States, and has dramatically cut the number of child migrants and families.

Convoys of Mexican federal police and immigration service employees in southern Mexico have begun scouring the tracks of the infamous freight train known as “The Beast”, hauling migrants from the rail cars and sending them to deportation centers. They have also set up moving roadblocks, checking the documents of passengers on interstate buses.
