5 Near-Identical Jesus Christ Myths That Predate Jesus (Photos)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I studied history in college, and spent a lot of my time researching ancient civilizations and comparative religions. As an agnostic, I am fascinated by religion and the idea of faith and belief, across all religions spanning the entirety of human existence. Some of the most fascinating projects that I did in college involved comparing ancient mythology to modern religious beliefs, finding similarities and multiple parallels. For example, anyone who has ever read The Epic of Gilgamesh will know that many biblical stories are plucked straight from the story, including the flood myth and the virgin birth myth.

Historians and religious scholars know that religious texts are made up of a series of myths (that’s not to say they are not true, but just that they are mythical stories). These myths appear across different religions and eras, and the same stories repeat themselves over and over again throughout history. Today, I will present to you five near-identical “Jesus” myths that predate Jesus Christ.

Please note that many of these stories have differing translations and interpretations, some of which tell different stories. The main idea of this list is to remind you that the story of Jesus Christ is rooted in ancient myth.

1. Horus (3100 B.C.)

Horus was one of the many Egyptian Gods. This is probably one of the best-known and contested deities that is often compared to Jesus Christ. Some translations and Egyptian myths say that he had 12 disciples, and was born of a virgin in a cave. His birth was announced by a star, and was attended by three wise men. He was baptized at age thirty by Anup the Baptizer. Horus performed miracles, including rising at least one person from the dead and walking on water. He was crucified, buried in a tomb, and resurrected, just like Jesus Christ.

2. Buddha (563 B.C.)

Buddha’s mother, Queen Maha Maya, had a dream that a white elephant with six tusks entered her right side, impregnating her. As was tradition in this time, the mother left her husband’s kingdom to give birth near her father. She did not make it the entire way, though, and gave birth while traveling. Buddha was born in a garden beneath a tree. In addition to this birth story, Buddha, like Jesus, also performed miracles, healed the sick, walked on water, fed 500 men from a single basket of cakes, was transfigured on a mount, and taught chastity, temperance, tolerance, compassion, love, and the equality of all. There are also some texts that say he was crucified, spent three days in hell, and was resurrected. That is not what killed him, though, as he died in his old age from what is believed to be food poisoning.

3. Mithra (2000 B.C.)

Mithra was an ancient Zoroastrian deity, and along with Horus has some of the most striking similarities to Jesus. Yet another example of virginal birth, Mithra was born to the virgin Anahita on December 25th. He was swaddled and placed in a manger, where he was tended to by shepherds. Like Jesus and Horus, he had 12 companions (which can be interpreted as disciples). He also performed miracles, identified with both the lion and the lamb, sacrificed his life to save the world, was dead for three days before being resurrected, and was known as the messiah, the savior, and “the Way, the Truth and the Light.” His religion also had a Eucharistic-style “Lord’s supper.”

4. Krishna (around 3000 B.C.)

Krishna, a Hindu God, was born after his mother was impregnated by a God. His birth was attended by angels, wise men, and shepherds, and he was presented with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Like Jesus, when Krishna was born, a tyrant had ordered the slaughter of all newborns. In addition, he was baptized in a river, performed miracles, raised the dead, healed the deaf and blind, used parables to teach charity and love, rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, and it is believe he will someday return to earth to battle the “Prince of Evil.”

5. Osiris (around 2500 B.C.)

Osiris was the son of one of the many Egyptian Gods. Like Jesus, Osiris was portrayed as a bearded man, and his myth says that he was killed and the resurrected after three days in hell. Also like Jesus, Osiris performed miracles, had 12 disciples, and taught that people could be born again through baptism in water. In addition, Osiris had many titles, including “Lord of Lords,” “King of Kings,” and “Good Shepherd.”

There are many more religious figures who have multiple similarities to Jesus, including Odysseus, Romulus, Dionysus, Heracles, Glycon, and others. Mythical stories depicting the virginal births of the sons of Gods go back millennia, most likely predating the advent of writing. Ancient myths neither prove nor disprove the existence of the Christian deity Jesus, but they certainly bring about some interesting questions, and I’m not sure that any of these questions will ever be answered.

“Mithra … along with Horus has some of the most striking similarities to Jesus. Yet another example of virginal birth, Mithra was born to the virgin Anahita on December 25th.”

Hey Pritchett — you know you can collect Ten Thousand Dollars if you prove this lie, right? Find something older than the Gospels which reflects this B.S., produce it here, and I will personally pay you the bounty.

Seven years now, Jeff. And in that time, no one has been able to produce. You know why? It’s because each and every one of these so-called similarities between myths and the Gospel accounts, was changed AFTER the Gospels were written.

We have the Gospels in hand. Our oldest documented proof of their origins dates back to the early second century. All we need is a single document or a single example from the archeological record that shows conclusively that your claims are true, and you win.

      Happy hunting.

(I know, I know – you’re not interested in money. No one is. Heard it all before. But it bears consideration at the very least… see which one of us is right. And if you can’t find what you pretend exists, then you might begin to reconsider your stance on a few crucial issues.)

      • JKnTX

        You have to be joking?
ALL the so called “holy books” were written by men, the most fallible and easily led of all creatures. It is absurd to attribute any “divine” origin to any of them.

        • BEEF SUPREME

          Then color me absurd, Tex.

And don’t forget to color yourself amongst the most fallible and easily led of all creatures.

          Happy hunting to you too.

          • JKnTX

Yawn. Twice nothing is still nothing, try again blowhard.

            • Mayhem

              Blowhard?

              Hardly!

Shut up and get hunting, Jake in Texas, there’s US$10,000 in it for ya. Something that predates the oldest manuscripts with substantial similarity to the Bible narrative.

Similarity is required given we know from the historical literary record that a man, claiming to be The Son of God, The Christ, was indeed crucified during the reign of Tiberius.

          • JKnTX

Practice what you preach, take your own advice first.
You have done nothing at all to prove what I said was anything other than correct, in fact you illustrated my point for me. You just spout off belief systems that are human constructs- not a single thing can be proved beyond the standards acceptable in any modern court of law. Touche’.

            • Damien

He isn’t talking about their divine origins just about the comparative age of existing manuscripts of the New Testament and supposedly similar stories.

The New Testament has the oldest surviving documents.

However the idea that the other ‘myths’ copied the New Testament would mean that they had never been influenced by all the other biblical stories the gospels drew upon. Not after thousands of years of living side by side with the people the bible describes.

The oldest stuff is all Cuniform etc (Sargon being put in a wicker basket) and there ARE millions of them still untranslated and millions and millions of them waiting to be unburied.

            • BEEF SUPREME

[Thanks, Damien. Mind if I handle a few of my own confrontations please? Pretty please?]

              ———————————–

Is something bothering you, Tex? Is there something you want here? Something you think I owe you? Very well. What is it? Use your words.

              You wrote:

“Practice what you preach, take your own advice first.”

Says who that I don’t? You? You don’t even know what time it is. And you imagine you know what I know?

“You have done nothing at all to prove what I said was anything other than correct…”

So you do think I owe you something. Why is that? Are you worth discussing these matters with? You seem to me more than a little off-balance and perturbed. Not exactly the sort of fellow that makes for productive conversation. But if there is something specific you would like me to address, please say on and tell me what it is.

“You just spout off belief systems that are human constructs…”

According to WHOM? According to YOU? And why is it that proof is incumbent upon me to provide, but not on you? Is the Bible the work of men alone without the agency of the Holy Spirit as an inspiring Power to guide its authorship? Then prove it. And stop bothering me with your vacuous opinions. Always the same with you bitter little nihilists – everyone but you owes proof. Children. All of you.

“…not a single thing can be proved beyond the standards acceptable in any modern court of law.”

So cite the case law. Show me the rulings where the courts have ruled on matters of Scripture. Or keep talking and demanding that which you refuse to give in kind.

I have time for this, Tex. How about you? Try me. Try coming up with a specific objection to the Scriptures; one which precludes them from being inspired by God. And Tex, bring something other than your vain opinion to the table.

God prepared the heart of man to receive the gospel by stories like these. The greeks were ready to receive christ thanks to their belief in the “first emanation” taught by their philosophy. Did God inspire these pagan beliefs? No, but he did allow them to come along in their day so that the people would have a point of reference for the truth when it was finally revealed.

a good example is the native american indians of the pacific northwest. they have traditional stories in their culture that are very similar to the noah flood story in genesis. missionaries were amazed at how closely they matched the bible account. this made the gospel much more available to be received by the indians.

      • BEEF SUPREME

“…a good example is the native american indians of the pacific northwest. they have traditional stories in their culture that are very similar to the noah flood story in genesis.”

That is actually a very bad example, when what we are examining is the claim of similarities between myths and the Gospels – with the myths supposedly being older. Many cultures bear traditional stories about the Great Flood – but this is merely a case of tradition recording an event which actually happened; it is not a case of one stream of tradition copying another.

        • JKnTX

Exactly how do you know that to be true?

          • BEEF SUPREME

            FACT:

Evidence of a global flood is written large throughout the entire geologic record.

            FACT:

There are literally hundreds of societies which record some version of that event.

            FACT:

Anyone who produces verifiable evidence of borrowing or plagiarism pre-dating the Gospel accounts in the New Testament, may then collect ten thousand dollars, payable by me, if they post that evidence right here at Before It’s News.

            FACT:

That challenge has been on the table for over seven years now, widely advertised on dozens, if not hundreds, of BIN articles.

            FACT:

In that time, not a single legitimate submission has been offered in an attempt to collect the bounty.

    • JKnTX

“I have time for this, Tex. How about you? Try me. Try coming up with a specific objection to the Scriptures; one which precludes them from being inspired by God. And Tex, bring something other than your vain opinion to the table”.

      I am sure you do.
I already did, they are the work of men, not any divine being. They are used to enslave and control men they do not set them free. You seem to approve of them, which means you support slavery. Try being more humble yourself junior.

      • BEEF SUPREME

Why should I do as you ask?

You expect something from me, but steadfastly refuse to provide the same in kind.

        That makes you a hypocrite.

        Nothing more.

        • JKnTX

          Yawn. Why should I?

        • JKnTX

I am still trying to figure out exactly why would you be offering anyone ten thousand FRNs to prove something that is nonsense to begin with.

          • BEEF SUPREME

“I am still trying to figure out exactly why would you be offering anyone ten thousand FRNs to prove something that is nonsense to begin with.”

Technically, Tex, the offer is for cash OR gold. Winner’s choice.

And the reason I do it is simply to prove the liars lying. Whenever you or anyone else sees articles like the one posted above by Mr. Pritchett, there is a reality which in all cases outweighs lies and opinions. I like to traffic in that reality, Tex. I like to expose lies. That’s why the offer stands.

People, including many believers, hear these sort of lies and are troubled by them. Would that they had a little motivation to study, they might learn in a hurry the facts of the case. All claims that New Testament Scripture borrowed or stole from pre-existing myths or religions, are lies. No exceptions.

There is meaning here for the inquisitive mind to glean. How fat is your heart, Tex? How concrete is your mind?

    • JKnTX

“Is something bothering you, Tex? Is there something you want here? Something you think I owe you? Very well. What is it? Use your words”.

      Lol!
Oh come on, even I can do better than that!

      • BEEF SUPREME

        As I say…

        Children.

      • Mayhem

This, JKnTX, is why you should bother. With regards to “holy books” you said…

“It is absurd to attribute any “divine” origin to any of them.

… to a guy who has bet his life, not to mention money, on the fact that the Bible is the inerrant word of a creator God.

So far all we have is your opinion, fair enough, got anything to back it with or are you merely blowing hot air?

    • dyingeveryday

this is nothing new.there were over 17 gods with the same story.you can prove these stories and people will still believe christianity.jesus is a sun god.just like many other sun gods.same story.i cannot prove who wrote the bible or who came up with the christ story etc i have good ideas but this i know with every fiber of my being there was no jesus christ.the best proof we have is the past and not the past they have taught us. you need to understand words, terms and meanings.where they came from.the same controllers that give us religions, education, governments etc are the same cabal that ran the show thousands of years ago.the game has never changed just the players

      • Damien

but this i know with every fiber of my being there was no jesus christ.the best proof we have is

        ================

That there were lots of ‘them’.?

Simon of Peraea (c. 4 BCE), a former slave of Herod the Great, who rebelled and was killed by the Romans.

Athronges (c. 4–2? BCE), a shepherd turned leader of a rebellion with his four brothers against Herod Archelaus and the Romans after proclaiming himself the Messiah. He and his brothers were eventually defeated.

Jesus (ca. 4 BCE–30 CE), in Galilee and the Roman province of Judea. Jews who believed him to be the Messiah were the first Christians, also known as Jewish Christians. It is estimated that there are 2.5 billion Christians in the world today, making Jesus of Nazareth the most widely followed Messiah claimant.

Judas of Galilee (6 CE), Judas led a violent resistance to the census imposed for Roman tax purposes by Quirinius in Iudaea Province around 6 CE. The revolt was crushed brutally by the Romans.

Menahem ben Judah (?), the son or grandson of Judas of Galilee, was a leader of the Sicarii. When the war broke, he armed his followers with the weapons captured at Masada and besieged Antonia Fortress in Jerusalem, overpowering the troops of Agrippa II in Judea and forcing the Roman garrison to retreat. Emboldened by his success, he behaved as an “insufferable tyrant”, thereby arousing the enmity of Eleazar, the Temple Captain and de facto a rival Zealot rebel leader, who had him tortured and killed. He may be identical with the Menahem ben Hezekiah mentioned in the Talmud (tractate Sanhedrin 98b) and called “the comforter that should relieve”.

Theudas (?–46 CE), a Jewish rebel of the 1st century CE, at some point between 44 and 46 CE, Theudas led his followers in a short-lived revolt. Some writers are of the opinion that he may have said he was the Messiah.

The Egyptian (between 52 and 58), Flavius Josephus (in Jewish War 2.261-262) says “There was an Egyptian false prophet that did the Jews more mischief than the former; for he was a cheat, and pretended to be a prophet also, and got together thirty thousand men that were deluded by him; these he led round about from the wilderness to the mount which was called the Mount of Olives. He was ready to break into Jerusalem by force from that place; and if he could but once conquer the Roman garrison and the people, he intended to rule them by the assistance of those guards of his that were to break into the city with him.”

Vespasian, c.70, according to Flavius Josephus

John of Gischala (? after 70), was a leader of the Jewish revolt against the Romans in the First Jewish-Roman War, and played a part in the destruction of Jerusalem in 70CE.

I read as far as the 100% fraudulent “Horus” story.

Anybody who cares can quickly learn it’s made up. Okay, any literate person can.

Many of us have gone over these items at BIN and have refuted them, point by point. It’s easy to do.

Religions are man made, spirituality, God given

Jesus is a word, the word means : ” I AM ” the way, the life and the truth. NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS

99% of Christians believe Jesus Christ is Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy.

The truth, all religions are brothers as they were given the breath of life.

On bended knee we shall know the truth, the truth is our greatest ” EGO ” buster.

      Gord.
