What does a comet smell like? That’s probably not a question you’ve ever asked yourself, but now that the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Rosetta spacecraft is hovering in the general vicinity of 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, we have an answer interesting enough that you’ll wish you had this information years ago. According to the ESA, comet P67 stinks. A lot.

Rosetta is on a mission to study the comet up close as it nears the sun. During this mission, Rosetta will release a lander called Phillae that will float down to the surface and make history as the first manmade object to come to rest on a comet. The closest we’ve previously gotten was crashing a probe into one as part of NASA’s deep impact mission. Before Phillae’s big moment next month, Rosetta is putting its own instruments to work characterizing P67from orbit.

Aboard the Rosetta spacecraft is an instrument with the snazzy name Rosetta Orbiter Sensor for Ion and Neutral Analysis (ROSINA). Its job is to gather and analyze particles released from P67 as it nears the sun. Comets are essentially giant clumps of dust and ice with vast pockets of volatile gasses locked up inside. When they near the sun, the ice begins to melt and the gasses escape. Even though P67 is still 400,000 kilometers from the sun, ROSINA has been able to gather a good sample of what makes up P67.

The initial report from September showed the presence of water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia, methane, and methanol. However, the newest batch of data lists several new compounds that would make this airless chunk of ice even less pleasant for the average human. Comet P67 also has plenty of formaldehyde, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen cyanide, sulphur dioxide, and carbon disulphide.

So the odor of the comet is quite toxic with a resemblance to rotten eggs thanks to that hydrogen sulfide. This is made worse by the stinging odor of ammonia and formaldehyde. There’s also a hint of sweet almond from the highly poisonous hydrogen cyanide and less dangerous carbon disulphide. At least you wouldn’t have to smell this witches brew for long before succuming. While all these compounds are present and would be detectable by the human nose, most of the comet’s coma is composed of water vapor and carbon dioxide. This comes from all the vaporized ice making up the bulk of the comet’s nucleus.

Scientists are interested to see how the composition of the coma changes as comet P67 heats up on its journey toward the sun. Phillae is currently scheduled to make its landing on November 11th, when it will dig its harpoons into the surface of P67 and get down to the business of science. This will allow the probe to get a sample of the object’s nucleus for characterization.

Comets like P67 originate in the Kuiper Belt, while others come from the more distant Oort Cloud at the edge of the solar system. The matter they carry may have been virtually untouched since the formation of the sun billions of years ago, making such samples scientifically fascinating.
