Trump Pulls Out Of Trans-Pacific Partnership (Video)

Charting a new course on trade deals, President Trump signed an executive order Monday that pulled the U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Getting out of TPP, which Mr. Trump has said was a “bad deal,” was one of his top campaign pledges and part of the America-first agenda he pledged to put into action in his inaugural address.

“We’ve been talking about this for a long time,” Mr. Trump said as he signed the order.

With the rejection of TPP, Mr. Trump put Capitol Hill lawmakers from both parties and and foreign leaders on notice that he was prepared to back up his tough talk on trade.

Mr. Trump also signed executive orders imposing a freeze on non-military federal hiring and limiting abortion funding overseas.

“I believe President Trump understands the importance of free and fair trade, so I’d like to pursue his understanding on the strategic and economic importance of the TPP trade pact,” Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told his parliament’s lower house. “When we met last time, I believed him to be trustworthy, this belief has not changed today.”

Mr. Trump also is expected to sign an executive order as to begin renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico — another agreement Mr. Trump deemed a bad deal and has blamed for massive exodus of manufacturing jobs from the U.S. since it went into effect in 1994.

The president said on Sunday that he would soon open talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Nieto.

“We will be starting negotiations having to do with NAFTA,” Mr. Trump said at a swearing-in ceremony for top White House advisers. “We are going to start renegotiating on NAFTA, on immigration and on security at the border.”

“I think we are going to have a very good result for Mexico, for the United States, for everybody involved,” he said.

The early action on trade highlighted how Mr. Trump’s populist agenda would shake up Washington alliances, with the Republican president encountering opposition for GOP free-traders and support from liberal Democrats.

Sen. Ben Sasse, Nebraska Republican, vowed to defend the trade deal.

“It’s clear that those of us who believe trade is good for American families have done a terrible job defending trade’s historic successes and celebrating its future potential. We have to make the arguments and we have to start now,” he said.

Sen. Bernard Sanders, the Vermont independent who has emerged from his presidential run as a leader of the Democratic Party’s liberal wing, applauded Mr. Trump.

“I am glad the Trans-Pacific Partnership is dead and gone,” he said. “For the last 30 years, we have had a series of trade deals — including the North American Free Trade Agreement, permanent normal trade relations with China and others — which have cost us millions of decent-paying jobs and caused a ‘race to the bottom’ which has lowered wages for American workers.”

“If President Trump is serious about a new policy to help American workers then I would be delighted to work with him,” said Mr. Sanders.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro, one of Congress’ most far-left members, said the opposition from labor, environmentalists and other liberal activists last year laid the groundwork for Mr. Trump.

“The agreement died from lack of support from Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the opposition of the American people. Today’s action underscores what happened last year,” the Connecticut Democrat said in a statement.

“Going forward, we will hold the administration accountable for a renegotiated NAFTA that creates good paying middle class jobs that cannot be outsourced and that raises wages in the U.S. We expect a trade policy that expands access to affordable medicine, safeguards our food supply, and protects the environment,” she said. “This is the standard to which we held the last administration, and we will demand a comprehensive, new approach to trade policy under this administration.”
