In my humble opinion in regard to Jesus and the example he set by his actions and words, it seems to me that many who claim to follow him are not following Jesus, but an interpretation of what he has been conveniently made into. The reason I think this is due to the changes he made from the OLd Testament (which was supposed to be the words of ‘God’) Jesus made some dramatic changes, particularly to the cruel judgemental instructions. Instead of ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’ Jesus taught that we should turn our cheeks and forgive. This is just one example of the many more similar changes that he made. This also tells us that God had made mistakes or that humankind had interfered with the teachings of God and that the OT was highly corrupted.
It appears that as Jesus continued changing stuff around he was also dismantling the walls of lies and threatening the powers of the hierarchy of the day and that’s why they stopped him from going any further before he had time to finish what he had started.
Apparently, Jesus didn’t write down what he taught, so the New Testament is the result of what his disciples and followers had remembered and understood of his teachings – and nothing at all was written by anyone until many years later. Considering, as we are told, that all the disciples abandoned Jesus when he was arrested and denied even knowing him, I feel very little confidence in what they wrote/said/understood.
The bottom line is: we have a mixture of the compassionate teachings by Jesus in the New Testament and the leftover hateful instructions of the OT and that’s the big problem. Instead of following the example set by Jesus and continuing his work accordingly (changing what he didn’t have time to finish changing) most Christians are (in variations) promoting evil with good, so to speak. One current example of this is how those born homosexuals are judged and treated. The OT says they should be killed and that’s what has happened in the past legally and continues to happen today (the Christian nation of Uganda is one such example). Homosexuality existed when Jesus walked the Earth and he obviously was not a stupid man. He would have known about it and if he thought that it was a problem, he surely would have mentioned it. But according to the NT Jesus didn’t say a word about it – nor did he teach that ‘anyone’ should be killed. It was Paul who mentioned this subject in the NT and he was just referring to what was already written in the OT – Paul was also one of the disciples that ran away and denied having ever known Jesus, so go figure…
I encourage anyone reading this to go check for themselves and get it right because, in the end, we are each responsible for ourselves….
