The Sims 3 – Latest in the Sims Series

The Sims series since the past decade has maintained a slot in the Top 10 sales charts of PC games, and EA has tried to expand upon that with its new edition, The Sims 3. The Sims 3 has been developed by EA’s The Sims Studios and published by EA for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS. It was released on June 2, 2009.

Gameplay
It follows the gameplay of the series’ previous titles in which players must control their own Sim’s activities and relationships in a manner similar to real life. Sims houses are placed on one continuous map. The gameplay is now open-ended and players can even travel to places outside their own houses. One of the new features in Sims 3 is the addition of “rabbit-holes”. The players can’t go inside a majority of buildings and disappear for a certain amount of time, this is known as a “rabbit hole” in video games, while they are given several choices through text-based notifications.

The Sims 2 reward system known as “Wants and Fears” has been replaced by Wishes in The Sims 3. Completing a Sim’s wish contributes to his/her Lifetime Happiness score and mood. Some events add little Lifetime Happiness points, while others like “Wish for Happiness” give thousands of points. The Sims 2 aspiration meter has been removed and replaced with moodlets, which affect the player’s overall mood. Moodlets can be caused by physical events, i.e. a good meal or emotional occasion like marriage. Most moodlets last for a set duration, while some are caused by the player’s surroundings or traits.

The Sims 3 has a new optional gameplay element known as “Story Progression”, which allows other Sims in the neighborhood to carry out their activities such as getting jobs, moving into other houses and going out of the neighborhood.

The game has many more options for Sim customization like the new “Create a Sim” with new hairstyles and clothes. The “Sims Exchange” allows players to download Sims, pets, hair colors and many more items made by other simmers.

The skills feature is retained, and is highly improved with even more skills and skill-based activities. Skills often affect career performance. Most of the skills from The Sims 2 and The Sims are back  along with new careers. The Sims 3 also includes part-time jobs available for teens and adults who have less time. Though a major improvement from The Sims 2, graphics of Sims 3 look outdated when compared to today’s games on PS3, Xbox 360 and the PC.

Expansion and Stuff Packs

The Sims 3 has various expansion and stuff packs. Expansion packs offer new features, worlds and careers, while stuff packs include sets of new items such as furniture, hairstyles and clothing. There are a total of 11 expansion packs and 9 stuff packs.

Verdict

Sims 3 is an amazing game, and while it may not sway hardcore gamers into liking the series, it will be enough to satisfy the already massive amount of Sims fans. It surely is a significant improvement from previous games. Please tell us what you think about the game in the comments section below.
