Teenagers are Sociopaths!!! (Study Confirms)
The nature versus nuture debate just heated up when according to a six-year study published recently in Developmental Psychology, the study showed that biology, not parenting, is to blame for insensitive and selfish behavior by teenagers. The conclusion many are taking from this study is that humans are born sociopaths (lacking empathy), and that empathy is a skill that is learned and developed with age.
“’Cognitive empathy,’ or the mental ability to take others’ perspective, begins rising steadily in girls at age 13, according to a six-year study published recently in Developmental Psychology. But boys don’t begin until age 15 to show gains in perspective-taking, which helps in problem-solving and avoiding conflict.”

This makes a lot of sense. Young children are naturally self-centered, which is a benefit as it is a mechanism involved with self-survival. As they grow and become more independent, their focus changes and becomes broader than in earlier childhood, and they see and think of others more easily. Also, the more situations with adversity or challenges they face, the more empathy they will have for others as they can identify more easily by having been in situations themselves.
When we “baby” our children and provide them with abundance and easy lives without care or responsibility, we prolong the juvenile, self-centered stage and end up with selfish, self-centered teens and adults. Over sheltering kids and not allowing them to play freely and explore also stunts their intellectual and emotional growth… adding to the problem.
