Blackshades Malware Infects 500,000 Computers

Federal officials arrested more than 100 people in connection with a malware that infected more than 500,000 people.

The program, called Blackshades, infected computers in more than 100 nations. The malware is capable of taking control of the processor and Web came on compromised systems. Blackshades also gathered personal information stored on infected computers. Some observers are referring to the program as “creepware,” due to the way it controls cameras.

Law enforcement officials in 19 countries are engaged in a crackdown on those people who designed and distributed the software. More than 90 people were arrested in over 300 searches worldwide.

Alex Yucel of Sweden was one of the people arrested in the sweeps. Authorities arrested him in Moldova, on charges he helped create the malware.

Users could purchase the application for around 40 dollars. This could then be used to remotely control Webcams on infected computers. Authorities say users invaded the privacy of their victims, and used the software to commit bank fraud with stolen passwords.

Government officials state the law enforcement operation was one of the largest of its type ever made.

Michael Hogue of Maricopa, Arizona was arrested in 2012 as part of the two-year investigation of Blackshades.

These new attacks come just days after the government announced concerns about Chinese hackers.
