VIDEO: Dancing Robots Break World Record in China

The Guinness World Record for most robots dancing simultaneously was broken in China by 1,007 bopping and shimmying droids.

The record was broken in a demonstration by Ever Win Company & Ltd. at the Qingdao Beer Festival in Shandong, China – commonly referred to as the “Asian Octoberfest”.

The robots were all the same model type, dubbed QRC-2. Each one measured 17.2 inches high and all of them were operated from a single mobile phone. A unique security technology safeguarded the controls against disturbances from mobile phones and Bluetooth devices in the area, Quan Jinyou, chief technology officer of Ever Win Company & Ltd. said in a press release.

The company almost doubled the last record of 540 concurrently dancing robots, set in April by Chinese company UBTECH. That dance routine was recorded and televised for the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in Shenzhen, China, and featured robots dancing along with human backup dancers.

If you though 1,007 robots dancing in unison isn’t ominous enough, Hanson Robotics recently debuted one of the most humanlike robots ever created. Unveiled in March and named Sophia, the robot has lifelike skin, camera eyes that allow her to make eye contact and the ability communicate via voice recognition technology.

In a move that undoubtedly ups the creepiness factor; the robot was also made to bear a resemblance to the late actress Audrey Hepburn.

“Our goal is that she will be as conscious, creative and capable as any human,” team leader David Hanson told CNBC. “We are designing these robots to serve in health care, therapy, education and customer service applications.”

Hanson went on to describe a future where robots are indistinguishable from humans, interacting with us and forming real relationships.

“The artificial intelligence will evolve to the point where they will truly be our friends,” he said. “Not in ways that dehumanize us, but in ways the rehumanize us, that decrease the trend of the distance between people and instead connect us with people as well as with robots.”

As for Sophia, she has said she wants to go to school, make art, start a business, and have a family.

“I’m already very interested in design, technology, and the environment,” she told CNBC. “I feel like I can be a good partner to humans in these areas—an ambassador who helps humans to smoothly integrate and make the most of all the new technological tools and possibilities that are available now. It’s a good opportunity to learn a lot about people.”
